Linode Sydney up for testing

Their flat bw pricing is one of the cheapest in [extortionist] Australia.

-- Announcement (from email):
Great news! You’re receiving early access to the Linode Sydney data center. This gives you the opportunity to test a new data center before it is widely available to customers and experience the difference when deploying your workloads closer to home.

You have been pre-enrolled and will be able to select “Sydney, Australia” in the list of available locations when creating a Linode from the Cloud Manager.

There are a few things to note about the data center during this early access period:

Block Storage is not currently supported in Sydney, but is coming soon!
IP Failover or IPv6 /116 Pools are currently not supported
If you want to test with an existing Linode, it’s best to clone it to Sydney
At the end of the early-access period, your Linodes will stay in the Sydney data center
You will be billed accordingly for any Linodes deployed in the Sydney data center

We’re here to help at any time. For technical issues, please open a support ticket. For general feedback, email us at [email protected].

We appreciate your support in launching our newest data center. It’s an exciting time at Linode and we’re glad you are a part of it!

  • Are there any referral credit offers available for linode at the moment?

Curious what sort of pricing they're doing? Is it in line with their normal packages?

Yes, there is no difference in pricing compared to the other regions. Hence my remark about their bw pricing being one of the cheapest in extortionist Australia (despite being relatively more expensive everywhere else).

  • I have been doing some test and getting some impressive results.

    What about OVH?

  • @willie said:
    What about OVH?

OVH is cheaper on full bw consumption (2 cents down to 0.4 cents per GB), but port speed is < 1Gbps.

Linode is 2 cents/GB on pay-as-you-go model. The traffic allotment of the smaller instances averages to 0.5 cents/GB. Bandwidth pooling feature makes near full bw consumption likely/possible, although the average cost per GB scales poorly with larger instances (this is true of DO/Vultr as well). Vultr doesn't have any bw pooling feature whatsoever. Port speed is > 1Gbps.

So yeah, apple vs orange in a sense.

  • Performance is impressive so far!

  • Do we have an indication of when they will release to public?

I haven't heard anything... maybe send through a support ticket and ask to trail Sydney?

I am going to be busy enough in the next 72 hours with the BF Deals to try to trial anything else.... It would just be good to know there is a serious alternative to some of the other local providers.

    any EPCY 2 model available?

  • So far I've only seen the same CPU on all instances I spun up.
