Dead Silent Server
I'm looking to build some silent servers without any fans, including the power supply units.
I have some old boards around on LGA 775 and 1151.
Do you have any recommendations for cases, fanless coolers and psu's without fans?
What cpu's on the 775 and 1151 have lowest temperatures?
Comments
Just throw away whatever you have now and buy a few Pis or Atom based boxes. They're going to be faster and cost you less than getting those old turds running quietly.
bigpowerhosting have dead quiet servers, just now.

Depends on silicon lottery.
EDIT2:
Neither. Grab a pi as suggested and don't look back.
I doubt this.
You doubt everything.
We're talking Core2 technology here.
Sure.
QX7700?
EDIT2:
1151 is even faster.
Also i can use Xeon L line from lga771 on 775, those have low tdp 35-40w.
Pi's look nice but very low performance.
That's why you build a datacenter out of them.
Low power xeon with low vid.
Core2 would still kill it in peak horsepower, but not per watt. Many people got 10 years out of Core2.
Something like this maybe? https://www.hardkernel.com/shop/odroid-h2/
EDIT: Nevermind, it's out of stock.
The amount of expense to cool it silently vs the expense of buying a couple newer atom tablets, though? We're taking ~$20 for a rootable A7 w/ 2G RAM and plenty of semi-fast SDHC, not to mention USB2/3.
If you are into fanless, number of low powered cpu out there. But usage of those will be limited even if that's 24/7, that can even become challenge.
Quiet rig doesn't mean you have to eliminate fans. Just get a decent case (with nice airflow), replace fans with premium grade (<19dBa) as well as fan controller if you must. Slightly costly but outcome is really appealing at the end. Not many people build rigs nowadays, hope you have very good passion to do so
It's not a server, but I've read about a completely silent PC build. Could build a server in a similar manner?

Linus got his hands on a mobile 4770 CPU modified to fit in a desktop board. Power consumption should be low.
Go with ssds for storage and something like a picopsu for power and you should be good to go

one thing you could search for is massive copper heatsinks. some builds that ive done, they have been able to operate entirely with no fans. you can find psu without fans. undervolting (and if you need to, under clocking) is also a good free option you can try, assuming it can be stable.
