YARSR (Yet Another Raindog Seedbox Review)

raindog308raindog308 Administrator, Veteran

In the world of seedboxery, there are really three flavors:

  1. roll your own
  2. sign up with a seedbox specialist for a pure seeding VM
  3. sign up with a seedbox specialist for a seeding VM + extras like Plex

I've done #1, generally with something simple like rtorrent. And that works fine, though the drawbacks are:

  • some of the typical cheap seedbox providers (e.g., Kimsufi) don't have the best networks in the world
  • DMCAs, depending on Linux ISO
  • if you want something fancy, you are setting it all up yourself. And that's fine for many people but in some areas, I'd rather pay a few dollars more and let someone else have the headache. It's kind of "do you want to run your own mailserver?"

I've done #2 with PulsedMedia. I generally like PM. Their systems work well and don't cost a fortune. You can get a nice seedbox for 10EUR/mo. I still have a Dragon Mushu there...for 13EUR/mo. It's a little disappointing that they don't grandfather pricing...if you sign up at 13EUR, you stay at 13EUR, even if they later release better plans. Just FYI.

PM has other options (some as cheap as 5EUR/mo) but I've just used them for pure seeding.

I've done #3 with RapidSeedbox, who was awesome...but also very expensive. I did a sheet of the per-TB cost of seedbox providers I was interested in, and RS was off the chart. E.g., my Ultraseedbox Jaguar Plex works out to about $10/TB, while RS was $36/TB. Still, great service...just expensive.

This time I tried UltraSeedbox, specifically their Jaguar Plex offering. It's a little different than the normal seedbox, as there's a 4TB up limit. They do have plenty of other offerings if you want unlimited seeding, but this one is focused on Plex.

I love US's control panel - very nice. Your box comes naked and you check off the options you want - e.g., rtorrent, rtorrent web, plex, filebot, etc. There's shell access as well. They have very good documentation - a whole wiki, plus they go out of their way to make finding info easy...e.g., you turn on an app and then in your installed app you can see complete connection details, links, etc. It's really dead simple to use.

Generally I find dedicated seedbox providers' speeds to be more than adequate for my needs. I have high ratios on trackers I use and things download quickly, and that's all I care about. I've watched via Plex via Roku and iOS web, and my UltraSeedbox has performed flawlessly. My only issue at the moment is poster downloads are inconsistent, but I think that's a Plex issue rather than US and I've seen that elsewhere.

Haven't needed support to date so I can't really comment on that.

Long-term, I may go with Ultra for a Plex center, and then perhaps a cheaper US, Pulsed, or Kimsufi for long-term ratio cultivation.

Thats like borderline shilling lol. Feralhosting is alright, they used to be the biggest seedbox reseller till they got busted by the French Police, but Seedbox.io should be avoided like the plague. They pasted the personal details of one of their clients on reddit because he stated a negative opinion of them.

If you've used cloudron, it's like that for seedboxes and they host it.

Interesting you regard pulsed media so highly, maybe things have changed but reddit doesn't seem to regard them much at all. I really dislike them not grandfathering their prices to match in line with their current offering. [Removed affspam site] did some reviews on them, and seemed below average to me.

I agree. I'm over at Ultraseedbox now. Been happy with them for the last ~year.

  • You also forgot about option 4
Get a Dedicated Server and pay someone to install and optimize it. I'd recommend this after option 1.

I have nothing against seedbox providers - but there is absolutely nothing better than having your own Box.

Try ByteSized, you will be surprised how good they are! Really enjoyed my trial. Also they look really "future proof" with their use of Docker :).

(a big +1 for PulsedMedia. The system is basic but fucking cheap and all work easy and quick. Sometime it's just what we want...)

    Well, no one's perfect...from Ultraseedbox:

To be fair, they've been golden for more than 12 months.

Any details on what vulnerability it was that was across all their systems and can take up to 3 days to fix?

Totally. Grab a Kimsufi and enjoy.

Grandfathering price means keeping the same price. I guess you just made a typo tho :) Thanks for the kind words.

Btw, there's lots of perks for old timey users with old plans, especially on the Dragon series.

and not the only "provider" to do that. There's a certain VM only today invite only outlet as well who has done that (and a ton more of community detrimental stuff)

Makes you question how was that their billing server was tied into whatcd like that, does it not? Lots of question, no answers to be found

we grandfather pricing. Grandfathering pricing means traditionally that your pricing remains unchanged for the lifetime of the service - instead of changing at any time.
OH, and we do give perks to old time users.

Without grandfathering, people would be generally A OK if prices lowered, but what if we are low on vacant hardware need more hardware and investments and need to increase pricing? That'll raise some hell. So grandfathering pricing it is -- Keep the same pricing on same service unless a force majeure enforces something else.

Reddit .... well there are some dirty words i could use about THAT specific subreddit .... along with that above mentioned "provider" which two go hand in hand.
On typical reddit fashion THAT subreddit is as biased as they come, and some of the mods are not shy to show their bias outright. Infact, we were told by one of the mods directly that their goal is to ensure nothing positive of us is mentioned ever, only negative, and to make sure we do not get sales from that subreddit. The community is the biggest loser there to allow for the power trip of the select few persons.

Other people have used words loosely meaning brown excreted thing in regards of that subreddit, publicly on that specific subreddit no less. It has become detriment to the whole seedbox users' community.

Cancel Culture is very strong in that subreddit.
