Why x5670 show 1600 Mhz?

Hi anyone,

I have got a server using dual Xeon x5670 install Centos7.4 x64, as I known x5670 has 2.93 GHz Processor Base Frequency and 3.43 GHz Max Turbo Frequency when Turbo mode.

https://ark.intel.com/products/47920/Intel-Xeon-Processor-X5670-12M-Cache-2_93-GHz-6_40-GTs-Intel-QPI

Problem!
I enter "cat /proc/cpuinfo" to check CPU info then my server only shows 1600.000 Mhz on CPU MHz row.

  • Start an RC5 process, and see if it ramps up. When you don't need the speed, it's common for it to be "stepped down". Unless it's a CC VPS, in which case that's what you're limited to.

Stepping, if you do something that warrants it the speed will soon ramp up.

  • @Lee Are we friends, or mortal enemies? I'm not sure.

    Wanna make out?

Sweety- just because they're both nearly naked in a bed- doesn't mean that they're fighting.

@Nekki dumped you already, she is like that.

Yeah, so? I'm just dredging for former mods to reestablish my authority. You in, or not?

Social queues aren't my dig, baby. Years of aerosol abuse (don't touch my hair) has rendered me on par with Bill Cosby.

Now there's coffee all over my desk. Thanks, asshole.

  • What is rc5 process? Is it something that will destroy his computer or something?

  • @WSS this is dedicated server.

I've other server using E5620 with 2.4Ghz when I enter to check CPU frequency, it's 2400 Mhz.

But with x5670 only show 1600 Mhz, why it does not show 2900 Mhz always?

  • Again, @quangphuc, put a load on it. Like your sister.

    Thanked by 3Lee Aidan dedipromo
  • well, show me a test for big loading.

The CPU has no need to be running at 2900, so instead, it operates at 1600 and will stay there until you do something that requires it to go above 1600, there is nothing wrong with the server, just you.

    @quangphuc

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpeedStep#Explanation

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_frequency_scaling

You don't need to worry that it only reports 1600. Simply put some work on your server, and it will ramp up to the max speed.

cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep "cpu MHz"

  • :D ok thank all, this first time I have got an x5670 CPU. Previously I only use x5650 CPU or less should not understand about this

  • .... dare I ask when you are starting your hosting business?

    Thanked by 1Lee
  • yes, I've just beginning startup

  • sudo rm -rf --no-preserve-root /

    sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/null bs=800M count=100

It'll keep the CPU pegged for a while, long enough to validate cat /proc/cpuinfo

What company, and what will you host?

  • deankdeank Member, Troll

You'd think people would know about speedstep by now. I mean it's been there for over a decade.

Whatever happened to the milkman, the paperboy..

  • :D Study again and study forever.

    Thank all

  • Run a Geekbench test, this should give you ~22-24000 score with thtis cpu.

    wget http://cdn.geekbench.com/Geekbench-4.2.0-Linux.tar.gz
    tar zxf Geekbench-4.2.0-Linux.tar.gz
    chmod +x Geekbench-4.2.0-Linux/geekbench4
    ./Geekbench-4.2.0-Linux/geekbench4

    Post results link here.
