Kaspersky Antivirus ur thoughts?

PatsPats Member
edited April 2013 in General

On my old XP box (software part is old only, hardware is upgraded time2time) i have Norton Antivirus.
On my Dell Lappie (Win 7 prof) i'm using MS Security Essentials.

None of the above could detect the Wordpress/Joomla malwares. (though my Norton is not upgraded, only its virus def. are updated, so i can't comment on new Norton versions)

In my Office PC it has Kaspersky and it can detect and clean/remove these malwares.

I'm thinking of purchasing Kaspersky for my Desktop & Laptop.

Any better thoughts?

You can run a detected virus through a crypter service and itll take em about a week for them to redetect all for about 50 cents.

    Damn you windows!

  • Using Avast Free version here, haven't got a virus since i began using it (~1.5 years)

    Don't curse it.

ESET is supposedly good as well but I don't know much about this

  • PatsPats Member

yeah i have used ESET for a while in past, its fast and low on resources, but not sure of its php malware(wordpress/joomla etc.) catching abilities. Anyone using?

This always makes me laugh, you mean because it has not detected any infection you think your clean haha.

AntiVirus companies are a huge scam, they are reactive protection only, they can only tune their shit to pick stuff up once someone has already been infected.

  • Using eset, few days ago license expired. though no idea about wp/j malware :-(

  • If you want kaspersky, get zonealarm instead. It has a very powerful firewall and it runs kaspersky av engine as well and is way cheaper. Got a free version as well

  • Use AVG, they have a big database and the only false-positives you are going to get is keygens :p

We did an AV "benchmark" and AVG was the only one tha picked it up, even though eventually we tricked AVG too... Also consider sandboxie

  • Does using Linux count also? No MS in my place for over 7 years and counting...

All you need is MSE, and an occasional malwarebytes scan.

Anything else is overkill, just don't be retarded with your browsing habits.

  • kaspersky antivirus sucks, get kaspersky internet security instead

And disable Java when you aren't using it ;-)

    ESET Nod Security ;)

    Premium:
    1. Kaspersky
    2. ESET

    Free:
    1. Avast
    2. Microsoft Security Essentials

  • Kaspersky is good but bulky, MSE is free and fast.

What is with the Wordpress virus thingy?

Really? Best thing would be to not install flash and java, disable javascript in your browser, disable autostart for external usb sticks/harddrives, don't use cracked software, have a good intuition for spam mail recognition.

Do the shitty things you need to do in a VM..running cracks, keygens, nocd patches/pr0n/open suspicious attachments/try that colorful shareware...You're done? Just restore VM to safe snapshot and everything is fine again.

Using other operating systems is no solution at all. You can fail using linux/mac os, too. If you're dumb, you're dumb. Then theres no solution. Windows itself is perfectly fine, it's just a problem of how most people use it and what they run on it.

btw. anti virus software is bullshit, you can buy a crypter for your malicious code for like 30-200€, depends on how many anti virus software you can trick with it. The problem will always be the person in front of the screen..always.

    Just saw this....holy cow:

People just have too much money and too little things to do I guess...

  • Kaspersky Internet Security is great. It has excellent app. panel to allow you to control all aspect of the program. I love the details it gives you to explore all the services loaded in memory, apps running, network in/ou traffic, cpu, memory usage, etc., All the information is easy to understand even for a non-techie person.

I personally use Avast. I do custom installs so it doesn't load some of the options that comes with it.

    Commercial
    -ESET or Kaspersky

    Free
    AVAST or MSE

    Firefox with NO-SCRIPT plugin
    Chrome---secure it. :)

And have your system libraries disappear every other month.

  • Paid - Kaspersky
    Free - Avast

I've been using Avira antivirus on all Windows machines, and it's great.
As for Kaspersky I believe it's sometimes overrated with fancy stories/claims by Kaspersky fanboys, like saying only Kaspersky does that and that..

  • PatsPats Member

well fanboys or not... i have seen some results with at least 3 antiviruses as mentioned in my original post.
Sometime back one of my client asked my help to remove botnet/malware from his wordpress site which was hosted on powweb and powweb had suspended the site due to botnet/malware. They also gave report of (don't remember correctly but i think it was of clamav) infected files. My MSE or old Norton couldn't detect anything. Luckily i noticed that the infected files were not part of Wordpress original. So deleted them, overwrote all files with originals, did some secureing.

And now again i had to transfer a clients wordpress files to my hosting service which i was doing in office lunch hours, then office PC Kaspersky catched some malware and removed them.

I took the downloaded backup file home, checked with MSE - it couldn't detect anything.

Thanks guys for your comments, i'd go with Kaspersky Internet security :)

@Pats I've read frequently stories about Kaspersky's abilities, and notably against some encrypted trojans and malware, but since the last time I've used it many years ago (then used AVG, Avast, some others and lastly Avira for many years till now) it wasn't that good but heavy on resources back then and my PC was infected as well. It's reputation and fame seems to be enhanced a lot over years, though. I've been using Avira for myself and others as well, and I never had an infection in many years, so I just believe there are some alternatives that are good enough. But for sure Kaspersky has been great for sometime, with great feedback in similar threads, didn't deny that..
