Does anyone know if Sophos Anti Virus is any good?

We get it for free from Uni :P I'm already using MWB Premium (Lifetime license) and ESET Internet Security. So wondering if Sophos is able to replace either (in terms of being the better choice)?

Eset Nod32 AntiVirus is the best. The only thing you need.

As said, ESET is one of the better solutions available for Windows.

I had NOD 32 before I had Eset Internet Security. Only took Internet Security because there was some deal where I got it (or rather eset multi device) for 20€ & 5 devices for 1 year. NOD32 woudlve been 23€ for 1 device at the same time. I can still install NOD32 instead though. BUT Internet Security being the version with more features I installed that one.

Nod Antivirus and Nod Internet Security are two different software. The antivirus, is well, and antivirus. The internet security is just malware/shareware protection for your browser and internet access.

Understandable, because it is tied into the browser and your internet access, it will have more features to tweak/modify the software protection, but it doesn't protect you from viruses. You don't need the internet security unless you are often finding yourself on sketchy websites or downloading questionable files. So if you stay off the porn and bit torrent sites, you should be ok without it ;)

Doesnt this list imply that ESET Internet Security includes Antivirus as well?

  • Why use an anti virus in the first place

Yes, that link DOES include the antivirus part. However, I was referring to them individually, as they are separate programs. You can purchase one or the other, or both together. And as I stated, the internet security is not needed, unless.

Is what I read. Wasn't clear you were referring to purchasing BOTH.

I am confused now. Anyway things are like this:
I purchased ESET Multi Device which lets you choose a certain ESET products per device/os. For windows I can choose between NOD32 and Eset Internet Security. I took the Internet Security because it has the same features like NOD32 + some more according to their comparation chart. Hope that clarifies things :P

  • Grab Eset, or BitDefender.

Sophos is an enterprise software with excellent signatures. It's a very capable antivirus laboratory, probably better than Eset in some types of protection.

However, sophos is an enterprise software. When you have 1000 computers and servers in your office intranet, you install sophos, not Eset. I would love to own a company where it would make more sense to choose sophos, it means I'm running a big business.

For home, not so much. Not because their antivirus signatures suck at home, but because you don't get corporate level attacks at home. You want something easy to use, user-friendly, low on resources, and has cute stuff like "game mode". You don't have game mode in the software of Fortune 500 companies' headquarters, but you want it at home.

Sophos doesn't have many user configurable options, or scheduled scans, for example. Because in a big business, it's protecting routers and file servers etc, not home users. Most of its configuration is done by a central config server and pushed to users.

So, pick a home-oriented antivirus like Eset and stick to it. Sophos also makes home versions, but those are the editions probably developed by the interns at the company. They don't care about your $20/year when their other customers are paying $20k/month.

Had to double check the datestamp because this seems like an argument from 10 years ago when AV was not ubiquitous. Now a lot of the AV programs are loaded with bloatware/adware and are no better than just using the built in WinBloz AV program whatever they call it these days.

Don't use Kaspersky. US intelligence people seem to think the Russian gov't has put in backdoors. They don't allow any Kaspersky software on gov't computers anymore.

I think your are mixing Sophos UTM (unified thread management, previously known as Astaro) with Sophos Antivirus. The first one is enterprise-level security appliance (thought there is free home edition too). The later just antivir.

Sophos UTM is one of the best you can get (although I'd presonally prefer IPFire as not only free, but open-source too). Sophos Antivir is solid product quite comparable with other free alternatives (i.e. AVG or Avast, to name a few). Nod32 may be better, but do not forget it is trialware/payware. But when considering linux alone, Sophos antivir is probably the best free antivirus solution available...

Please stop using anti virus software, it makes things worse not better.

Maybe you are being sarcastic or trolling but whatever, I agree anyways. It causes more problems than it solves 99.999% of the time. I only recommend the built in WinBloz AV/firewall and nothing else.

Still get a laugh everytime I see someone running 2 or 3 different software firewalls/ AV programs in addition to the built in WinBloz one. Because more better of course! And they wonder why their Puter is slow and various things don't working.

Well malware tools such as mwb can be really handy. A friends laptop was suuuper slow but avira wouldnt find anything. Then I installed MWB premium free trial and it found 3000!!! PuPs (potentially unwanted programs). I never have found so much trash on a laptop but it was all speedy afterwards. Was tons of Adware, toolbars etc. Friend was not really techy though so yeah. That's what happens^^

Malware a little different. I just run MalWareBytes and then uninstall it otherwise it nags you constantly with adware/updates/whatever and installs itself in background without asking.

So even MalwareBytes sucks but still somewhat useful sometimes. A lot of these "free" programs are installing trojan malware programs themselves.

No, this is my honest opinion.

Malwarebytes' is the only anti-malware that I recommend people and use myself. It's not bloated and slow like the majority of others.

OR: Run ChromeOS. Has no features, viruses, life, or support.

Interesting. I stopped using Kaspersky about a year ago when their support suggested that I illegally source supporting software.

That it is. The latest version is pretty polished. If you can find an old copy of MWB for sale with a "lifetime" license, you can install that, then perpetually upgrade forever with no further cost. I two two licenses, even if I only use Windows for auto repairs.

Neverware is just bad. I tried putting it on a P4 mobile, and ended up going back to a simple Puppy based distribution on the donate machines because it had the CPU perpetually pegged so hard doing nothing.

Yes, the founder of Kapersky was/is former KGB with ties to higher ups and Putin. It's been known info since their inception, but just now the US/Trump decides this!?! When I first looked into Kapersky years ago, I thought it sounded shady, and went for NOD.

    JK!

Trump has a major hardon for Putin and Russia. Probably because they buy a lot of his tacky condos. So he will never go along with that. It's being decided for him. He's too busy yelling at clouds to care.
