How much RAM does your average WordPress install use?

I have some customers that run installs with 1GB+ RAM usage and I never reach that value with my personal wp installs. What does your wp install consume?

  • He probably have shit ton of plugins. I didn't knew if 128 mb vps can run 3 wordpress install prior to one post so I would say it's totally dependent.

Under wordpress sites I use servers with 8 GB of RAM and higher to work quickly.

Now powerful servers have become very cheap so it would not be useless to use it.

  • Depends on what kind of caching you are using. But 1gb is a lot

Really depends on your kind of installation actually. WordPress installations using all sorts of 3rdparty plugins can use a ton of additional memory compared to a "stock" installation. Some of those plugins contain horrible code and won't run efficient, hence the higher memory usage.
We manage a server running a huge WP website with a lot of plugins - during peak hours memory usage of PHP-FPM exceeds 40GB. This cannot be compared with an average website, but I know 75% of the memory usage is being caused by crappy coded plugins.

RAM is not an issue in 2017. I'm more concerned about CPU usage.

Actual use from WP is around 3.5GB, the rest is cached RAM.

  • I had a WP plus mysql running comfortably in 512 MB with a couple of 100.000 unique visits per month. I guess the trick is to a) not have insane plugin collection and b) to have everything (php, mysql!!) properly configured.

  • We have some sites that likes to suck gigabytes with decent amount of traffic - one of the most optimized ones runs with less than 200 megs doing 7.3 million page views so far this month.
But that's with some help from caching plugins as well, but yeah, it really depends on the sites.

  • It really depends on how big website is and the number of visitors. :)

It doesn't depend on number of visitors - people can have so shit sites that even a single visitor will use more than 5k visitors on a really good optimized site.

To be honest, a lot of people are really bad at making WordPress sites.
    Like really bad.

  • It depends on the type of content. If it is highly static then you can go with really low RAM and CPU. My site gets around 20 000 unique visitors (i know it is not much) a month on a 1$/year shared host, it uses really low resources. I cache the pages, use histats for statistics and cbox for a little shoutcast box. I outsource every cpu intensive task or cache them. Where i use small images - i use already scaled images, not doing anything on the fly. Scripts doing it in the background at night.

I can imagine that a dynamic wordpress site is using a lot of CPU and RAM, but i think CPU becomes an earlier problem if the site is not on dedicated resources.
The usual problems i think: badly written statistic plugins, dynamic image sizing plugins, scrapers, ajax/javascript supported chat systems (can cause flood if badly written).

WordPress needs "crazy cache" and i doubt WP Super Cache too. We use WPTC on our site coupled with Nginx fcgi

    We get

  • My site is installed on DigitalOcean server on $5 plan with 512mb ram. with 16 plugins installed, no cache plugins installed and weekly 5-10 unknown visits. to be precise it is using around 250 MB ram

  • Few people here ignore that he has used word average and not highest -/-
