Yup, just did some traceroutes and it sure is a direct connection to China.

Unfortunately, the speeds to my local connection (UK) maxes out at 16kB/sec on a 60mbit connection :(

EDIT: (8th Jan) - Now receiving much better download speeds, ~3mbit from the other side of the planet.

same here, from my LAX & CH location.

datacenter seems to be hostvirtual ( www.vr.com )

  • Hi guys! Well, ... we had to take actions. SunnyVision pulled all the registers to get rid of us. Looks like we used too much of what they did not have and we got too expensive for them as a client. 6 months of prepayment to SunnyVision blown in the wind, but what else can you do if the firm really sucks? Connectivity through VR can not be compared to HE only what we had at the end with SunnyVision. We hope that our machines found a good new home in HK now and that our clients enjoy the new bandwidth options.
BTW I would like to say THANK YOU to the technicians of VR who took care of the whole server-migration in Hong Kong!
    Cheers, Gerhard @ EDIS

  • Edis rocks as always, love their new .im location :)

  • @bobby said: Edis rocks as always, love their new .im location :)

What is the advantage of the IM location over plain UK?

  • @djvdorp said: What is the advantage of the IM location over plain UK?

    hipster +1

  • @gubbyte said: hipster +1

Only that (the fact that its not so crowded as uk might be ok too)

  • @djvdorp said: What is the advantage of the IM location over plain UK?

The Isle of Man is not part of UK or EU jurisdiction.

  • BTW: Routing within HK (HKIX) is still a bit tricky. SunnyVision still needs to remove the announcement of our IP addresses. We'll put some pressure - if this does not work out, we will contact upstreams to get things sorted. There is not much cooperation to be expected from SunnyVision. We're glad that they allowed to pick up our infrastructure.
    Sometimes I just wonder ...

@William This is how you should not route, contrary to what VR seems to think.

Note: Direct China is limited to a few Mbit shared due to costs, Please do not abuse it.

There are still some routing flaws (mainly inside HK, namely HKIX) as Sunnyvision did not remove the BGP announce yet fully (even though i did send them the LOA withdraw)
(This is also what @Wintereise 's problem cause)

  • Oh, if it's just a matter of time, then fine :)

  • Also, we are in fact in the NTT datacenter and get NTT routes as well, just not whitelisted yet :)

How large is your netblock? Split them into smaller /24's?

  • It's only a /24 in HK.

  • FYI, I'm only getting about 12 KBytes/sec (100 kbps) transfer downloading a file hosted on the Edis HKG. Tried from the US (Dallas and NYC) and from Germany.

  • @jon617 @Wintereise from my edis vm in HK this appears to be getting better now. I do still go to /dev/null via sunnyvision for some locations though, hope that @William can get them to stop announcing :(

  • China telcom is good, less than 80ms,while china unicom is about 250ms

Connectivity from South Australia isn't as good. :-( It used to go via Singapore and now it goes across the Pacific (twice) via San Jose.

  • Hmm, from my end (SG) the route goes through AS6453 via Palo Alto > Chicago > New York > London, then finally HK.

@unused said: appears to be getting better now

Yeah, much faster now. Happy face.

  • My AWS cannot connect to my EDIS HK instance. When I ran traceroute I get @unused result.

  • Yes, as said, this is due to SunnyVision - Out of our control for now.

  • JyleeJylee Member, Host Rep

    oh no!
    shang hai,china→taiwan→he.net→hongkong

  • I say for people testing, wait a day or two then try again, it seems some routes are still messed up from the move.

  • @Jylee said: shang hai,china→taiwan→he.net→hongkong

Eh, what? That's the most unusual route i've ever seen in my life... China routing Traffic through Taiwan...

  • There is definitely something strange going on, from a he.net server on the west coast it sometimes routes he->sunnyvision->dead and sometimes routes to he->ntt->edis. (I did once see he->korea telecom->edis, not sure what to make of it.

Sounds like nothing to do but wait until sunnyvision stops the announcement & the new routes to be fully propagated then optimized.

  • Hi all!
we contacted upstreams already. SunnyVision doesn't seem to be in the mood for removing the old announcements. To be quite honest with you ... we didn't expect anything else.
    cheers, Gerhard @ EDIS

  • by the way, outgoing connection from EDIS hk vm to entire city of macau is blocked. I cannot connect to any ip in Macau from my EDIS hk VM. e.g. www.ctm.net
