[REQUEST] VPS with Good Connectivity to China

KobeKobe Member
edited June 2016 in Requests

I'm looking for a VPS to host Shadowsocks on for the next 3 months while I'm traveling to China as a backup in addition to my other VPN accounts.

My budget is ~$3/month.

Requirements are: 500GB Bandwidth, 256MB RAM, 5-10GB HDD, 1 core, PPP enabled, Jon Nyugen isn't involved.

KVM is a huge selling point for me.

I'm not specifically looking for any country, but strong connectivity (peering) with China Telecom and China Unicom are a must. While it would be great to get a Hong Kong VPS, experience dictates that this is unlikely. USA, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Canada, Russia, etc are more than fine. I'm not being picky because I know for a fact that $3 doesn't go that far.

I've been told that Quadranet has strong connectivity with their Asia-optimized routes, which would probably be the most likely bet (a small VPS) within that budget.

    LA is your best bet.

That's what I thought. Realistically anything on the west coast of America with decent connectivity with China/Asia probably would cover my needs.

  • I never used QuadraNET Asia optimized, but that's definitely an option you can try.

I used virtwire's LA location (swiftnode/fevvo with China Telecom connectivity) as a VPN solution when I was in China, was getting 170ms ping from Shenyang, and 150ms ping from Beijing. Can't remember any packet loss, but that's all up to the time of the day and the GFW of China.

These are annual offers, but are pretty cheap. https://my.virtwire.com/cart.php?gid=36

Or these for monthly payments. https://my.virtwire.com/cart.php?gid=35

YardVPS is Psychz brand in LA and they have china optimized.

I can recommend Crowncloud (Quadranet) or BuyVM

Not sure about how well ShadowSocks works, but I can recommend SoftEther for use inside China.

btw, after monitoring ping times from my Quadranet server for a month, I found that Asia-optimized IP don't affect the routing for the majority of the time. It does help in rare situations but it's pretty random.

I would also install softether as I found it to be the most reliable

It depends on where you are in China. Funny enough, I was in Guanzhou but my fastest VPN connection some days was DO Singapore even though my VPN on dediserve HK was only 100km away.

Good idea to have several. And there is one that is free from google play, betternet, that works almost all the time on my phone, okay for checking mail while on the move.

And while in China it is difficult to install from google play so be sure to download what you need, esp maps, before you go.

    Good luck.

ISPs in China except for China Mobile route to US west then back to Dediserve Hong Kong, that's why you will get a poor connection speed and a high latency. It's not realistic to have a low-end Hong Kong VM which has a directly route to China Telecom now.( Leaseweb HK is fine but the price is not too low-end)

Remember to have your ServerSpeeder installed, or you will experience a slow connection (~300kB/s)

OpenVPN doesn't work in China and may resulted in having your VPS' IP blocked.

    Good Luck :)

There is a report that OneProvider has switched to LeaseWeb for their VPS offers in Hong Kong: https://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/comment/1750155/#Comment_1750155
If that's indeed the case, you can get one starting from $5.

The minimum requirement that enables you to pick HK location is plan 2 which is 10$/mo
Other resellers I know are serversub(10.99$ Xen) and ControlVM(18$ KVM)

Google Maps is kind of useless in China anyway due to the random 50 - 1000 meter offsets they add to GPS there.

What map apps do the Chinese use that allow for accurate navigation? Ideally in English.

US nodes rn't the best location for VPN. Nodes located in asia have low latency and good connectivity. If your Chinese ISP is China mobile, just pick up one DO Singapore for $5 and that's enough. If your ISP is China Unicom, pick up one Vultr JP for $5. If it is China Telecom, you don't have many choices. The best nodes are IDCF(Which doesn't allow non-Japanese), Ablenet(Needs set-up fees) and Kdatacenter(Korea, for $19). If you r rich, you can choose Krypt Singapore with premium network which routes to CN2. Better to choose CN2 instead of CN1 cuz you'll see the traffic jam:). But DO NOT choose budgetvm though it's routing CN2 cuz their nick name is boomvm. Do not choose location other than Los Angles and Phoenix.
Believe me cuz I'm a VPN seller in China. Hope you enjoy it:)

Are you going to be restocking anytime soon? Was really hoping to grab your $12.50 plan.

Later today, I try to post in the offer section every other week, but demand from China has been greater than expected, think they love the ability to use AliPay now :)

  • http://tinykvm.com/ TinyKVM has a 256MB KVM VPS in Los Angeles (QuadraNet) with good China connectivity, though IP is not Asia optimized.

  • @Safehousecloud I'm quite satisfied with the speed of your network (QuadraNet).

For some reasons the network between QuadraNet Los Angeles and Aliyun China North 1 (Qingdao) is super congested during rush hours (8pm - 12am CST).

Also Alpharacks has OpenVZ and KVM servers within the budget.
