ASN and IP Block for Individual End User

ARINs polices and methods are a bit confusing to me but I would like to get an ASN and an IP block for individual use. I would need to use something like HEs BGP tunnel (and maybe netassists to be multi homed) as my ISP doesn't provide those services. As for the IP block, I understand that IPv4 is pretty much impossible to get so IPv6 it is. What is the best way to get these resources? Does ARIN even give out resources to end users?

My plan is to using it for my home lab where I run Openstack and would like to have a public v6 address for each VM. I'd like an AS number instead of just a tunnelbroker as I would like to learn about BGP/peering and implement it on my network.

  • Why ARIN if you can get it external easier? :>

You'd need an ARIN ASN though, which is like 500$/yr - RIPE does not like pure usage outside region anymore, if you however just get an EU pop (like a VPS with BGP from Clouvider) and peer with your ISP and HE/Netassist there plus announce a /48+ permanently you can still get a cheap ASN from a RIPE LIR (like sub 100EUR one-time for it and then around 5EUR*12 for the VPS/yr, 60EUR/yr instead of 500$/yr).

    Thanks for mentioning @William

  • Lets say that I didn't mind the ARIN ASN fee. Is it even possible. To my understanding ARIN asks you for your legal business name when creating a Organization ID as well as signed contractual agreements between you and the ISPs you are peering with (in my case HE and NetAssist). I don't have either.

Also is it 500/yr to initially register and then 100/yr or is it 500 annually. The ARIN fee schedule webpage also mentions that the annual maintenance fee does not apply when an organization has an allocation. What does that mean?

  • Well, if it helps..

HostUs can get you APNIC ASN's as well as APNIC PA & PI Space, and ARIN PA space..

You can use individual data instead of a company fine. You will need signed contracts which neither will provide, so you'll have to get paid upstream - Sometimes ARIN is happy enough with a mail, mostly they are not.

500$ reg and 100$/yr. If you are ARIN member (500$/yr) with either IPv4 (by inbound transfer, can't get new) or IPv6 (alloc from ARIN, price varies) you get one (might be more, never tried, but must be in name of LIR account, cannot be end-users) free ASN.

From what I remember, it means you can't avoid paying the maintenance fee; you have to pay it whether you have ASN or allocation. However, you don't pay it twice if you have both.

Can these ASNs be used outside of the APNIC region?

  • @hyperscaleX2 - Asked HostUs Support and they have said "yes, you can use the ASN's outside of the APNIC Region"

  • AutoSnipe said: yes, you can use the ASN's outside of the APNIC Region

Only if the company the ASN is registered on is based within APNIC area.

    APNIC good, RIPE bad

According to their site, APNIC makes a distinction between ASNs obtained "from a LIR" vs from APNIC directly:

However, if you got your ASN from an LIR, you can only use it while you continue to receive connectivity from the LIR. That is, if you decide to no longer use the LIR as one of your upstream providers, then you have to return the ASN. (Note this condition only applies to ASNs assigned after 1 December 2002).

Not sure where a HostUS ASN falls in this. It counts as "from a LIR", then it could be seriously limiting to get an ASN from HostUS.

Whereas it appears in RIPE, the ASN is always assigned to the "End User"

The RIPE NCC will assign the AS Number directly to the End User upon a request properly submitted to the RIPE NCC either directly or through a sponsoring LIR.

  • @singsing - That is something you would have to take up with Hostus.

RIPE does not have that maintenance fee? Once you paid the first fee you're ok to go for as long as you want?

Ok, but then do you have to pay a yearly fee or something?

  • AutoSnipe said: That is something you would have to take up with Hostus.

I probably would, if I had a clear and present need for an ASN ;)

I, an Austrian Company Prager-IT e.U., register RIPE ASNs for a one time 50 EUR setup fee +VAT if applicable. However I fully expect you to use at least some RIPE IP resources with that ASN inside the RIPE region. Both Banktransfers and PayPal are accepted.

Currently the RIPE NCC does not charge a fee for ASNs, should that change in the future I would charge 20% on top of the RIPE NCC base fee.

If anybody is interested you can get in touch via Skype "Prager-IT" or drop me an email "[email protected]".

  • @hyperscaleX2
I am using Hostus' services, they are OK. Eventhough people say region is not important, I'd follow @William 's suggestions on this.

I do the same price but VAT inclusive for 5 orders, if anyone wants :)

  • So even if my organization is not within APNIC can I still use an APNIC ASN outside of APNIC region?

  • hyperscaleX2 said: So even if my organization is not within APNIC can I still use an APNIC ASN outside of APNIC region?

Found a document that appears to contain all the answers (if the RIR's haven't changed their minds since providing input):

    https://www.nro.net/wp-content/uploads/comp-pol-2015v1.pdf

See page 3, 1.2 Membership, APNIC, access to delegation and registration services.

So, if you have to have an organization located within the APNIC service region to clearly be allowed to use the resources out of region.

Whereas, with RIPE NCC, it is required for the network to have an active element within the RIPE NCC service region, which is distinctly less flexible and subject to shifting interpretations.

However, with APNIC, you run into the caveat that ASN registration is very expensive if you need a portable ASN that is not tied to a LIR, probably more expensive even than ARIN, see below:
