Good Free VPS Server Monitoring

Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent free monitoring tool for Linux (specifically Ubuntu 14.04)?
Needs to handle metrics (so CPU, RAM, network) and (ideally) email-based alerting for < 5 servers, and be SaaS. Retention isn't a huge issue but 1 month would be nice.
Ideally something like StackDriver or NewRelic would do, but I'm unsure exactly how many servers NR's Lite tier supports, or whether you can just monitor servers on their own without app-level reporting.

@vfuse and nixstats
Legend, will try it out, thanks

Let me know if you need any help getting started with NIXStats, feedback is appreciated as well since it's still in beta
how to signup nixstats?
Use invite code LET.
I use NixStats, New Relic Server Monitoring, and Linode Longview (it's free even for non-linode servers)
@vfuse nice, thanks a lot, nixstats looks awesome!
I've created a Puppet module to help with installing (all of my boxes are Puppet-controlled).
Feel free to share it around - https://forge.puppetlabs.com/CraigWatson1987/nixstats
Only installs the Bash agent at the moment, may add the python one later this week
@vfuse Nixstats looks great going to add servers for monitoring soon will share the feed back But
Great monitoring tools
@vfuse
try nodequery
works good for me
I use: http://newrelic.com/ on the free tier.
Too bad, nixstats is timing out for me right now when I went to sign up.
Frontend has been a bit up and down last hour or so, however API servers seem fine on the backend.
Is a beta.
What about nodequery.com/?
Yeah I understand it's beta, but wouldn't keeping the frontend up be a priority? It's been down for the past 2 hours counting.
Observium, Nodequery, nixstats.
LowEndDDoS?
Nixstats has been timing out for me all day. No biggy to me but might be a sign needs to build out more before it goes live.
Everything should be good to go again now. Maintenance didn't last that long but somehow cloudflare kept showing 50x errors.
Obviously as soon as NIXStats goes into production things like this won't happen, that's why it's in (closed) beta, so we can test the waters.
nixstats +
Testing nixstats, seems to be good
I am testing nixstats too. It looks nice but why is it free?
Any privacy or security issues with them?

Its free during the closed Beta period, will be chargeable once feature full and bugs resolved, I am sure will be some form of discount for people that helped/support during the beta stage.
Thanks a lot. I hope it can be affordable too.
Yea...but why the server uptime still 100% even have maintenance,see pm
