Block website in Windows?
Hi,
I want to know if there any way to block websites in Windows/Chrome?
I know about host file but I want to know how I can block a website (including all sub-domains)?
I have used a couple of chrome extensions and none has the option to block website including sub domains, as I cannot add hundreds of sub domains manually to block them. Something like *.website.com would be ideal.
Any suggestion?

Maybe use a firewall?
uBlock? uMatrix? Either one of those should work.
use firewall
Is your son watching porn or something?
You can apply these IP addresses 199.85.126.20 and 199.85.127.20 within your network DNS to block porn websites. They are supported by Norton.
block in hosts file?
Use adblock and write some custom rules? https://adblockplus.org/en/filters
blocking never works always a way round it, however it can be done as others have side by windows firewall quite easily
Use dnsmasq and apply your rules there?
I think you can try block it with Chrome's group policy. The URL blacklist might be what you are looking for.

You can edit host file and use something like this
0.0.0.0 blockedwebsite.com
Have you read the post? I need to block its all sub domains.
You should do it in your router.
Some come with a feature to block websites on specific computers a.k.a parental controls.
(just in case they figure out a way to get around it)
Then add all sub domains it has
0.0.0.0 sub1.abc.com
0.0.0.0 sub2.abc.com
It will surely have 100,000s of sub domains, should I add them manually?
Just coply all sub domains to excel, then add 0.0.0.0 using excel command, and copy all back to host file
I think you're missing the point....

I'd suggest setting up an unbound instance with a custom block list.
How about OpenDNS for home use?
Edit: At OpenDNS, if you block a domain, it assumes you want a wildcard block... so enter example.com, and it'll block *.example.com. Source.

Search for K9 software. Is free for personal use. There is nothing more effective for windows. It also covers https.
Try using dansguardian and some custom iptables rules as your main gateway it worked well for me before I got wfilter enterprise.
or try this: http://www.smoothwall.org/about/express-feature-list/
or try untangle free(I used to use it until they got too expensive to filter both https and http)
To piggyback off the wildcard subdomain question:
How do I block a whole "family" of websites that have the same IP? For example, SBNation has 300+ distinct domains as part of their "family" of sites, and most seem to use the following IPs:
216.146.46.11
216.146.46.10
first let me ask what filtering software are you using?
as every filtering software has different ways of doing this.
@timnboys
I do everything via the hosts file currently on both Mac & PC, sounds like that won't be enough for this instance.
try using dansguardian as your web gateway(or router) and see if that helps or if you have a spare windows machine you can use wfilter free(I use wfilter enterprise I paid for because it has more features like tieing into my home active directory.)
Wfilter Free
there is the link to wfilter free above.
