How to know if is a SSD or HDD?

WHTWHT Member

Just bought a VPS from a let member that claims to have SSD Drive.

I can download 30 MB per second and I dont think this is a SSD.
I have already asked for refund.

How to know next time that i have SSD?

But since you say you have already asked for a refund, it doesn't matter any more.

  • What test did you do to get that number? Did you do a IOPS test?

I have downloaded 1000.bin file and on the end of download told me that it took xx seconds to finish at 31.6mb second.

As I have read with a SSD should I download 100-200mb per second.

  • @WHT where you location and VPS location? it also depends on the connection both server <-> client.

That's not necessarily true, you couldn't download at 100-200mb per second if you're on a 100Mbps port, for example. You need to be running more disk specific tests to try and determine if it is SSD, I/O and IOPS are a good place to start. Though, if you don't trust your host to the extent that you think they may be lying about the type of disk they use, do you really trust them with your data?

How to test iops? And how much should I get?

  • A download has nothing whatsoever to do with disk or disk speed.

I actually wanted you to check the dd command which can be used to test the Read/Write performance of a Storage device.

Download speed has nothing to do with disk speed (I hope this is another joke)

    btw: try

    cat /sys/block/sda/queue/rotational

If the results is 0, than you have a SSD

edit: it's a VPS, so my suggestion won't work

    /facepalm ...

On a serious note. Put it this way ... If you had an HDD at home, and you then upgraded it to an SSD, do you think that will increase internet >download< speed?

  • Really a Joke...
Download Didn't mean anything with ssd .

  • I always test it with a wet finger. Works good and downloads are fast afterwards.

  • Simply download your file once on a system and then to /dev/null it there is a difference ....then you drive is lowering write speed thus making it. An HDD...
BTW the best test is using ioping

Speed is not making SSD or HDD. You can have terribly overloaded SSD that will be slower the standard magnetic SATA drive. Does it make it HDD? No.

  • If the drive weighs about 77g or about 3 oz.

Could always try that stupid DD command people think "works"
