Proxmox

Hello,

Just wondering how many people here are using proxmox for offering VPS? (i.e. not asking if you using it for testing things). Any issues ?? Any awesome features or performance improvements??

I guess while back, everyone looking at Solusvm, now seems like virtualizor is getting famous. What about Proxmox ??

(I am guessing Proxmox not having a WHMCS module is also playing a part here)

    • @vapornode (since they do LXC so probably ProxMox)?

    • From what I can tell usually proxmox is used mainly for development or internal use, I have yet to find any provider use proxmox as a CP for selling vps

      I haven't seen any either :)
Added a poll to get more info. Hoping people will reply :)

A few definitely do, they just don't use the normal proxmox interface to manage them. I know ImpactVPS does, just check the kernel running and if it includes -pve then you're running on Proxmox.

    • I think Buyvm use Proxmox, at least for their Slices...

    • There are a lot of providers that do use proxmox as vps platform. Proxmox is secure and mature. Ad there is a whmcs module for commercial use: http://www.modulesgarden.com/products/whmcs/proxmox_vps/features

May be you should consider offering Stallion ;)

Proxmox is great, I don't use it though because it was never designed with the hosting market in mind.

Really the only option to use it like that is to code a custom 'something' to go in between proxmox and your automation/billing software.

if you don't want to or cant code that yourself then you have the choice of 'modules garden' and the idea of making modules garden the backbone of my business is about as appealing as brushing my teeth with coarse sandpaper.

    • We do use Proxmox but certainly not with the included interface. It isn't really friendly for end-users. Instead we developed our own control panel and Hostbill modules using the tools Proxmox provides.

What are you using to connect WHMCS with Proxmox ?

My HostUS KVMs show the Proxmox logo on boot when using the console.

    • Wow, this is really interesting.

I never thought Proxmox will be leading the poll. I was expecting a close fight between Virtualizor and Solus.

Proxmox is not leading the poll, in real life. SolusVM is the king, because there is not a commercial alternative capable and mature enough for a hosting company. Proxmox is ideal for personal and commercial use but not for automatic selling using WHMCS. It needs custom scripts/apps to be used by a provider automating the creation of the vps and giving the client an interface of controlling it. Those who did it, enjoy the maturity and stability of this panel but also have abandoned entirely openvz.

I've never understood what's so great about either solus or whmcs. The place where I used to work did its own ordering/billing stuff in rails and it wasn't that big a deal afaict. It wasn't vps hosting so the constraints were a little different, but these things are basically all CRUD apps around existing api's. I don't mean it can be thrown together overnight but I don't understand why whmcs/solus have so much market share.

Cpanel/Softaculous is different and more impressive at least at first glance. It seems to do a lot and would be harder to replicate than whmcs or solus unless I'm missing something (which is very possible).

Do you use proxmox cluster and HA?

    • Umair said: Any awesome features or performance improvements??

Proxmox supports shared and distributed storage like iSCSI, Gluster and Ceph, networking with Open vSwitch, firewall features etc. The complete list can be found here - https://www.proxmox.com/en/downloads/item/proxmox-ve-datasheet And Proxmox uses its own pve kernel v4.

I guess it's because of the title of this topic it didn't attract enough attention. If it was a generic "What VPS panel do you use?" you'll see a different result because a majority of LEB/T hosts use SolusVM.

All the 3 panels can be tried free of cost, so I suggest you try them all before choosing one because migrating after making a wrong decision can be a PITA.

LOL. Did you have a bad experience with them? Mind sharing it.

You are right. That might be the reason. Still surprised to see so many people using Proxmox :)

I was trying to avoid doing "testing" for each panel as it will take a lot more plus I am not an expert in KVM side of things so probably wouldn't be a fair test. That is why I was asking questions about KVM and panels in last few threads.

      We use Proxmox.

When determining a platform, there were different problems with each one. For the top two, SolusVM has a lack of updates/features and Virtualizor needs polish in the client/admin interface.

There were definitely tradeoffs when selecting Proxmox, but in the end the tradeoffs were less so than with the others mentioned above. There are also other features possible with Proxmox which are not available with the above products and these features would better align with our needs in the future.

I have also used Proxmox extensively for projects in the past and have always enjoyed working with it.

ProxMox is a great software but in my opinion it's not user-friendly.
Virtualizor is also a great software and has a lot of great features but I guess it's problematic when you reach your 1000th VPS hosted on it.
SolusVM is great, good but the company who acquired it (OnApp) has taken it's development stages to the worst, they've been promising SolusVM V2 since 2013 and till now they haven't released this big update yet!

and also ProxMox does have a module for WHMCS and HostBill

You sound like no panel is good enough to use :P :P
I guess all have their + and -

So which one are you using ??

      //Edited
I see you are on SolusVM. I guess its fine for OpenVZ based servers. I also have one server running solus and Openvz. And yes, @OnApp_terry killed it :(

SolusVM is by far the best one you could use, doesn't have any problems with neither KVM/OpenVZ/XEN and is very stable it's just the development stages that takes a lot of time, unfortunately.

The only thing keeping me away from SolusVM is the ability to use dual LVM in Gust.
(i.e. one disk on one lvm and one disk on a different lvm in gust)

I have a ticket with them but so far, they clearly saying it can not be done even with CLI.

I am considering giving Proxmox a try as well.
At least their "community support" seems very active. (i.e. lots of people contributing in forums) compare to other forums.
