VPS for under €1 a month

FreekFreek Member
edited December 2011 in Providers

Hi.

Today I stumbled on two VPS providers, both selling their cheapest VPS at under €1 a month:

FastVPS.co
15GB Disk Space
1000GB Bandwidth
1 X 2.67 GHZ CPU
256MB RAM
1 IPV4 Address
$1 a month (billed anually at $12)
Instant Setup
Port speed: 100Mbit
OpenVZ - USA
Domain registered on 31-Oct-2011
http://www.fastvps.co/vps-hosting.php

MiniVPS.co.uk
15GB Disk Space
128MB Ram/256MB Burst
500GB Bandwidth
1 IPV4 Address
£0.83/month! (billed anually at £10)
Instant Setup
Port speed: 100Mbit
OpenVZ - UK
Domain registered on: 27-Jul-2011
Requires special link: http://www.minivps.co.uk/cart.php?a=add&pid=7 . Offer ends 1/1/2012
(Found it on WHT)

I decided to give them both a try. Here's a very small review of both of them:

FastVPS.co
Setup is indeed instant. Payment by PayPal only
I was vmuser #66 and from the looks of the speedtest, I get the feeling they oversell 'a bit'..:

`root@charlie ~]# wget cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test
--12:01:49-- http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test
Resolving cachefly.cachefly.net... 205.234.175.175
Connecting to cachefly.cachefly.net|205.234.175.175|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 104857600 (100M) [application/octet-stream]
Saving to: 100mb.test

100%[=======================================>] 104,857,600 1.01M/s   in 1m 43s

12:03:32 (995 KB/s) - 100mb.test saved [104857600/104857600]

That's even slower than my crappy DSL connection.
Let's give that another try:

[root@charlie ~]# wget cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test
--12:24:54-- http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test
Resolving cachefly.cachefly.net... 205.234.175.175
Connecting to cachefly.cachefly.net|205.234.175.175|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 104857600 (100M) [application/octet-stream]
Saving to: 100mb.test.1

100%[=======================================>] 104,857,600 1.26M/s   in 92s

12:26:26 (1.09 MB/s) - 100mb.test.1' saved [104857600/104857600]

Nope Chuck Testa. A bit faster, but not what you've would expect from a 100Mbit VPS.

One last try:

[root@charlie ~]# wget cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test
--12:27:02-- http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test
Resolving cachefly.cachefly.net... 205.234.175.175
Connecting to cachefly.cachefly.net|205.234.175.175|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 104857600 (100M) [application/octet-stream]
Saving to: 100mb.test.2

100%[=======================================>] 104,857,600 4.17M/s   in 16s

12:27:17 (6.32 MB/s) - 100mb.test.2 saved[104857600/104857600]

That's odd. Really fluctuating and unstable network if you ask me.
I contacted support, and they replied within 15 minutes with the message they got a '7.81MB/s' on my VPS running the speedtest... Surprising.
I replied saying I certainly wasn't able to get those speeds, and got another reply within 15 minutes telling they need my rootpassword to "log in directly on your VPS and not connecting via the node to run a another test"...
Anyway, although the response time to ticket seems fast, their English skills seem lacking (just like mine, but I'm not from the USA ;) )

Ultra short term verdict: Good as development VPS, not for (commercial) work environments.
(Verdict subject to change, as I've just got it for an hour or so).

miniVPS.co.uk
Setup is also instant. Payment can be made by PayPal or Moneybookers.
I was vmuser #1477. Speedtests looking good:

[root@bravo ~]# wget cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test
--2011-12-29 12:39:42-- http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test
Resolving cachefly.cachefly.net... 205.234.175.175
Connecting to cachefly.cachefly.net|205.234.175.175|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 104857600 (100M) [application/octet-stream]
Saving to: 100mb.test

100%[======================================>] 104,857,600 20.7M/s   in 5.5s

2011-12-29 12:39:48 (18.2 MB/s) - 100mb.test saved [104857600/104857600]

Another one:

[root@bravo ~]# wget cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test
--2011-12-29 12:40:10-- http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test
Resolving cachefly.cachefly.net... 205.234.175.175
Connecting to cachefly.cachefly.net|205.234.175.175|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 104857600 (100M) [application/octet-stream]
Saving to: 100mb.test.1

100%[======================================>] 104,857,600 30.5M/s   in 3.5s

2011-12-29 12:40:13 (28.8 MB/s) - 100mb.test.1 saved [104857600/104857600]

Looking good.

Third one's a charm:

[root@bravo ~]# wget cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test
--2011-12-29 12:42:41-- http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test
Resolving cachefly.cachefly.net... 205.234.175.175
Connecting to cachefly.cachefly.net|205.234.175.175|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 104857600 (100M) [application/octet-stream]
Saving to: 100mb.test.2

100%[======================================>] 104,857,600 18.8M/s   in 9.0s

2011-12-29 12:42:50 (11.1 MB/s) - 100mb.test.2 saved [104857600/104857600]

Hmm, what's that now!?

Response time to tickets is about 15 minutes. According to their 'Meet The Team' page, it''s not a one man show, but a small company with 4 employees, although 2 are non engineers/techies.

Ultra short term verdict: Looking quite good so far. At least it's faster than the VPS from 'FastVPS.co' ;)

If you want me to run any other test on the above VPSes, just let me know and I'll run then for ya. (Please do include the commands, as I'm a Linux newb!)

Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with the above hosts in any way and I'm a huge Linux noob, so forgive my 'humble' mistakes, if any ;)

  • @Freek said: Sigh. Why is my code make up not working?

Perhaps maybe use the <pre> tags instead of the `?

I've got a VM at miniVPS as well, it's been running without problem for me. Thanks for the reviews :P

    but from UK. :P

try using pre tag. and thanks for sharing your experience with them. :D

@Mont5t3r and @Aldryic : Thanks. How do you guys know these tags? BTW I'm not from the UK either.
Also, what's the alternative tag for bold and quote? Doesn't seem to work well either.

FastVPS just replied in regard of the slow network speed:

    Hello,

why you get this slow speed, it's because you VPS are on a 125MB of guarantee ram ...

     If you run this test:
     wget --output-document=/dev/null cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test
The VPs will not write the info on your VPS but just perform a download speed test and this is the result:

     wget --output-document=/dev/null cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.
     test
     --12:46:58-- http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test

     Resolving cachefly.cachefly.net... 205.234.175.175
     Connecting to cachefly.cachefly.net|205.234.175.175|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
     Length: 104857600 (100M) [application/octet-stream]
     Saving to: `/dev/null'

     100%[=======================================>] 104,857,600 7.53M/s in 13s

     12:47:12 (7.66 MB/s) - `/dev/null' saved [104857600/104857600

    That's odd because
    1. My VPS should (and does) have 256MB of guaranteed RAM, as according to their website
    2. The VPS from 'minivps' runs the test just fine and that one does indeed just have 128MB of RAM...

I don't think that cachefly downloads can be used as an indicator of overselling or an "unstable" network. You're sharing the network connection and harddisk with other VPSs. Your performance will be determined in part by what they're doing. You could be one of just two VPSs on the node, but if the other is slamming the network and disk hard, your performance will suffer.

Having said that, if they're not overselling at a $1/month for that amount of memory, diskspace & transfer, then it's a Christmas miracle :)

@Freek said: How do you guys know these tags?

Mainly from trial and error here at LET :P I believe @drmike was the first to point out that the pre tags worked better than the code tabs. Personally, I use code for short commands,

    and pre tags when
I need to do multiple lines
    or paste a
    lengthly amount of text

I never can seem to get -strikethrough- to work correctly... but all the others do fine for me. You just have to be careful and not leave any whitespace between the character and the text you're modifying.

    bold text?
    HTML works here too.

Thanks for the comments guys ;)

    Re: FastVPS.co
Well, apparantly it's not 256MB guaranteed RAM, but burst RAM, according to their post on WHT:
    http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1111298

The problem is that if you're not coming from WHT, there's no way for you to know it's burstRAM, as it isn't mentioned anywhere on their website. (Or it's just me).
Also, this is asking for trouble (if you're an LEB provider):
IRC, Gameservers and Shoutcast are allowed
Further in the topic: Proxy is allowed....

Still, for 12 bucks you can't complain. I see it as an experiment :)

Some HTML. span tags with extra parameters for example don't work.

  • @Aldryic said: I never can seem to get -strikethrough- to work correctly

    Try the < del > tag. < s > and < strike > are deprecated anyway...

  • @sleddog said: Try the < del > tag.

Works like a charm, thank you sir :P

    Thanks for the review.
I do love the second offer (MiniVPS), will grab one for tests.
But I have to note that I'm more afraid that the other one (FastVPS.co) is for attracting a number of customers to the annual thing and closing down in 1 or 2 months, given their start date, but, well..:)

  • FreekFreek Member
    edited December 2011

@Go59954 Yeah I'm not surprised if I wake up one of these days and they're gone like the wind.
I get the feeling it's a one man show and that man is from France according to the 'Envoyé de mon iPhone' under the mails.
Nice IP I got from them as well. Upon Googling it shows up on many many 'offensive IP databases' and such.. Great ;)
MiniVPS seems more longterm. We'll see how things go.

FastVPS is an odd one, their whois has a Florida and Montreal address, I also noticed their email replying to an ad in Vancouver so not really sure where they are really from? They also answer with "Hrllo Sir," but anyways at least they have SSL on their sign-up page and they are cheap so I got two of their monthly VPS packages. Don't think I would sign up for their yearly deals thought since they are a new company, not sure if they will last the year.

  • What about dd/ioping? I think disk tests are better indicator of overselling on cheap LEB's.

  • Yep, I found that fastvps offer too. Unfortunately paying yearly isn't the best way to go with new providers.

  • Fast256MB:

    root@fa256:~# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync

    16384+0 records out
    1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 19.0507 s, 56.4 MB/s

    Fast512MB:

    1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 14.5584 seconds, 73.8 MB/s

use to get 100 MB/s guess they are filling up the node now..

@joodle said: @earl same with mine, are you on the alpha node?

I am on the "Apha" node.. so yes I guess it means Alpha, I think they only have the one server thought, cause both my VPS is on Apha

@earl Yeah the amount of typo's in their emails is over 9000, but that also could be the cause of using an iPhone to respond to tickets...

@yomero Usually I'm not too found of paying yearly either, aspecially in the hosting industry with all those one day fly companies. However, it's just 12 bucks for 1 year so I took my chances.

@joodle @earl I'm also at the alpha node, so yes they only have 1 node.

@jenok I hate to say it but yes I think you're right ;)

    FastVPS 256MB:

    charlie:~# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync
    16384+0 records in
    16384+0 records out
    1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 22.9911 s, 46.7 MB/s

It's slow as hell right now. Putty lags like crazy

    MiniVPS 128MB:

    [root@bravo ~]# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync
    16384+0 records in
    16384+0 records out

How about combining your posts, instead of double posting/post spamming so you can throw your offer up again.
This community is very tight. Get to know people, actually join the community, and in return you'll gain more sales/loyal clients.

  • @earl Haha yes I suspected already something like that ;) It's just too tempting to not try this offer, even if you know in the back of your head that it's too good to be true.

    @jenok FastVPS

    @net Indeed you are right.

    (10GB Disk, 200GB B/W, 128MB/256MB RAM, 1Gbps port, Unknown DC, $15/year)

    This is an odd one:
https://www.nbvps.net/ It says 'Only $1 a month' on their Kansas VPS, but when you click compare, it's suddenly $15 a year.

BuyVM probably has 100 58 servers.. and when you have that many your price per server is significantly cheaper than what Fastvps is paying for their one server.. so while I can see Buyvm as sustainable I can't really say for sure how long fastVPS will last.. I'm keeping my fingers crossed thought, cause I like my $1.5 VPS
