What do you actually use your kvm for?

I've done a bit of googling here and there, but I have to admit, I still don't quite get what people use KVMs for. I recently got a 1 gb ram kvm simply because its cheap, but I'm at a loss about what to do with it. I understand that you can manage your own kernel with kvm, do more stuff with iptables and whatnot, but what do you actually use your kvm for??? As an example, I use my ovz to host wordpress sites, or maybe a seedbox, but I haven't found any real use for my dedi (and kvm) yet. What do YOU use your kvm for?

(Side question: I can't seem to reinstall os on my kvm, am I supposed to do it myself somehow or contact the provider for help?)

  • Play with Docker?

  • The point is that you can have 800 OVZ VPS's with 1GB RAM each on a 64GB RAM node; but you cannot do that with KVM.

It actually seems like you can oversell with KVM, it's just that it's not as easy as it is with OpenVZ.

  • Play with next gen container tech.

  • I use mien for mainly for Rancher (docker) http://rancher.com/

  • Let it idle. Best use for any VPS.

The same things you use your openvz vps-es for, just more controllable/convinient and more secure.
There are a lot of very usefull tools which do not work on ovz, which complicates even the simpliest tasks like making backups.
So i usually try to avoid ovz alltogether, if possible...

So... The main point of using kvm is to avoid the limitations of ovz and ensure you can do whatever you want to do with your server? But for nooblets like me, I don't quite need the extra functionality or docker since I won't be making a lot of servers. (Also, couldn't you just write a script to install stuff for you, and not use docker at all?)

I get that its harder to oversell kvm -- but does that justify the higher price tag? I understand that people tend to avoid ovz for production purposes, but isn't it better to jump straight to dedi when you're doing something for production, not use kvm?

  • Install server-speeder

  • Play with operating systems I stopped caring about when Linux won- but would still rather have just in case someone weasels their way in- and is too stupid to recompile to fuck me over.

    FreeBSD.

Once you go BSD, you never go back. (That doesn't rhyme, but whatever...)

  • For example, KVM allows us to deploy both SSD and HDD based storage to instances for our customers on our premium KVM range rather than the single storage volume for OVZ.

Docker. You can't do docker (at least not in any meaningful way) on an ovz 2.6 kernel...

  • I use for NFS -> CDN

  • I use it for Windows Server OS installation sometimes.

    I laughed so hard :D

  • I bought that lamp. It's one of those automatic lamps: when I clap, it wiggles.
