Wanted UK LEB

JoelJoel Member
edited December 2011 in General

Hi Guys,

I'm chasing a UK low end box with the following:
256mb ram
1gb HDD
25gb Bandwidth
1x IPV4

Purpose: Needed for a simple Bind DNS project. Yearly pricing would be good if it makes it considerably cheaper.

I've looked at LEB, hosts offering far more bandwidth and far more HDD space than I need.

Any suggestions appreciated, happy with either OpenVZ, KVM or XEN. Server must be located in the UK.

    Hi Joel,

I've still got this going if you need something fast and reliable:
    http://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/933

Or if you're looking for something cheaper I've got a little space on our old OpenVZ platform.

Yearly pricing will be 12 months for the price of 10.

  • Thanks Max, I had taken a look. They all offer copious amounts of HDD and Bandwidth compared to my requirements. If I can get away with not having to buy huge chunks of whatever I don't need i'll try ;)

    Joel seriously,

You won't find anything in northern ireland, wales or scotland. So england it is! That has narrowed it down (actually it hasn't as there isn't any hosts in the above locations if you don't include host sheep ). As everything is rooted through london you might as well get something in london/surrounding areas. Bye burstnet. I would personally recommend edis as I have a kvm with them in Austria (and no it hasn't tried to invade any of my websites users countries/computers) and it's pretty rocksolid plus they're austrian more intelligant than 90% of the english native hosts (cough uptimevps santrex tophosting rus foster overselling ltd uk2 group). http://en.edis.at/vrs-smart_38_82.htm however you could always contact ramhost http://www.ramhost.us/?page=vps/kvm-england-eu as he might have some non advertised stock (I believe hes very flexible and you could work out a custom package).

  • I would also recommend both given suggestion from maxexcloo and add some comparable (in terms of quality/price)

    http://www.edis.at/virtuelle-root-server_82.htm (edis uk location)

I should flag your post for deletion on the mere mention of BurstNet :P ;)

Thanks both @net and @Spirit for the suggestions, firing off an email now.

  • @Joel: just grabbed myself a XenVZ VPS 256mb Xen PV from their Xmas Offer which @Spirit also linked, pretty decent!

Could you post some benchmarks? dd/wget? cpu info?

    Cheers

XenVZ uptime is usually longer than 200 days however last reboot was two months or so ago when they migrated to their own IP range.

    Rapidswitch location:

    CPU model : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU L5410 @ 2.33GHz
    Number of cores : 2
    CPU frequency : 2333.332 MHz
Total amount of ram : 86 MB
Total amount of swap : 127 MB
    Download speed : (11.0MB/s)
    I/O speed : 78.9MB/s

    Newcastle location:

CPU model : Dual Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 280
    Number of cores : 2
    CPU frequency : 2392.536 MHz
Total amount of ram : 86 MB
Total amount of swap : 127 MB
    Download speed : (3.46MB/s)
    I/O speed : 63.4MB/s

Both VPSs are from their older LEB deal, not lastest offer. I am not sure if they are still taking orders for old RS location and new servers are provisioned in Newcastle - but if you want RC better ask Sean before. You can find him also on IRC (irc.staticbox.net #xenvz)
Imho. you it's hard to find stablest LEB vps with more advanced custom control panel.

You should grab something at DMBhosting, they're simply brilliant.

See the specs of my dmbhosting server here - http://servphp.titanicsaled.co.uk

I've got the 256mb dedi/512mb burst openvz plan. The IO is about 130mb/s. If you want any more info, see my review of them on LET

    Nice nice :P

I got their one pound offer (64MB xen), and is in an "old" 1.6Ghz processor :P The disk is like the @Spirit one, maybe worse xD but useable.

    Really? I'm on a 3.2Ghz Xeon too, with around a 30MB/s DD

  • I was choosing between OnePoundWebHosting and TheUKCloud, end result came down to OnePoundWebHosting offering a great price on a Xen based VPS. They have also been around for a long time, I did a bit of digging. Small outfit, small operation, with a history of reliability.

Thank you to everyone who participated here and gave me some pointers, really appreciated.

  • No problem Joel, keep us updated we can never have enough benchmarks!

  • @Joel:
glad we could be of any help. i am looking forward to a benchmark if possible, plus pricing and specs ;)

  • I've put some geekbenchmarks in Maxexcloo's thread, and some network benchmarks in max's other thread.
