1GB RAM KVM in Switzerland

busbrbusbr Member
edited November 2016 in Requests

Hi all,

Putting an email encryption solution on trial and would love a Swiss box to test things out. 1GB RAM, Hard drive should be at least 10GB (HDD or SSD) if possible, otherwise don't care and very light usage. Can block 25 outbound (but not inbound). IPv6 is a huge plus, and should be able to do rDNS. LET pricing please. Not too familiar with the pricing there, but can potentially accept 512MB.

They don't do IPv6 at the present, but definitely would consider.

If you are ready to compromise on disk space, edis.at offers 1 GB KVM VPS in Switzerland with rDNS and a /112 IPv6 allocation.

But the disk is only a tiny 5Gb HDD.

Wait, I pay over 8EUR for 1gig and 5GB Disk?

I don't know them but I do colo in the same DC.

Switzerland isn't a cheap country. If you absolutely want IPv6 connectivity for a sub-$10 VPS, your options are pretty limited there.

On the other hand, Exoscale.ch has a pricing similar to the one of Digital Ocean. Except for bandwidth. Only 100Gb outbound is included. And there's no IPv6... yet.

I wish people would get a clue and stop suggesting other country based hosts, when in the original question the need for location is clearly jurisdiction based. EDIS server hosted in any country is also within reach of Austrian authorities, i.e. not any better than hosting in Austria itself. Not saying the latter is necessarily bad, but I was under impression the OP is looking for Switzerland, not Austria.

EDIS in general, has such low disk not only swiss.

Not entirely true; some locations are not accessible to Austrian agencies and are backend wise NOT rented/run by the GmbH - there are further US and LI companies still in use.

That GmbH staff has access to the servers is not relevant - they cannot be forced to disclose.

Yes, i went through that books back then and set that up for eg. ARIN, it is secure and legal but mostly probably used to pay less tax ultimately.

My experience with a Edis VPS Switzerland was rather bad. I had a VPS for almost a year (paid full-year), mostly idle, since bandwidth was terribly limited (most of the time under 10MB/s!). Their support was rather unhelpful pointing out that they couldn't help since it was a shared host. Of course when ports are shared one cannot assume having always the 1GB/s as stated in their product description, but I have never had such a constantly bad network performance with anyone else.

Downloading a test file from their UK location to the CH VPS:

    wget uk.edis.at/100MB.test -O /dev/null

    --2016-10-03 11:21:05-- http://uk.edis.at/100MB.test
    Resolving uk.edis.at (uk.edis.at)... 46.17.63.250
    Connecting to uk.edis.at (uk.edis.at)|46.17.63.250|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
    Length: 100000000 (95M) [application/octet-stream]
    Saving to: `/dev/null'

    100%[===========================================================================================================================================================>] 100,000,000 589K/s in 1m 56s

    2016-10-03 11:23:01 (852 KB/s) - `/dev/null' saved [100000000/100000000]

If 512MB Ram is sufficient for you, you can try SinaVPS for CHF 9. I had good experience with them.

Testing from Goscomb in UK (which will take a SFINX route via France where both Goscomb and init7 only have a few Gig) is not a good test either though; Italy and Austria are far better.

Generally Nine BW is ok, if you don't oversubscribe it too much - it has it's issues though still like limited UPC/Cablecom connex.

Yeah, that was just an example. In fact, Edis support asked me to use three of their locations for speed testing purposes, one of which was UK. The others didn't look much better.

    wget nl.edis.at/100MB.test -O /dev/null

Well that is already double ;)

Never too sure if EDIS or Nine quality went down (when they started to offer Gbit unmetered) but the spiral seemingly has not stopped yet...

  • @William Just curious (since you seems to be rather independent these days) - what sorts of services do you usually offer to individual customers nowadays?

Consulting in the mid-priced area mostly on cloud solutions & network as well as security (but no audits; i subcontract this to experts) from my office in Croatia.

Outside of that my invested companies offer eg. VPS and network related services (Protection, IPs) also here/LEB/WHT etc. plus i have a rather large investment base in Israel, but by lack of time of my primary job i have someone running the tech and someone for financial plus someone in Austria for my office tasks and a programmer for backend things. Not much interest in operational influence, takes too much time i can use better.

Lastly some opensource/free stuff and NGO things which are paid by all, eg. free VPS, IPv6 tunnels and so on.

Tl;dr cannot complain about income or business ({insert weird sounding depression remark here})

    KVM, 2GB Ram, 50 GB HDD -> CHF 7/month.

I have no experience with them, and they seem, like SinaVPS, to be singlehomed Softplus?

    Right, sorry, I misread this.

Absolute recommendation from my side. Fast and reliable service for the last years.
