MXRoute down :(

PepeSilviaPepeSilvia Member
edited September 2016 in Providers

First time I've noticed this, and this happened at the worst possible time when I need to send a time sensitive email :(

Anyone know what's going on? I've noticed it about 20 minutes ago, and it's still down.

Edit: Looks like they posted an update, they're getting DDOSed

Everything is online now, sorry about the trouble. DDOS attacks have been hammering away today. If you are unable to reach a server it is most likely related to DDOS filtering. In such a case, please open a support ticket (client portal is filtered on another network) so that we can get an IP from you and have you run a traceroute for us.

Hi Jarland can you tell us where each server is location like one, ocean, mx1 etc and what is difference feature wise on them too.

Sorry, while the infrastructure isn't a secret, I'd like to not advertise all of the potential pain points today. Feel free to open a ticket and I'd be happy to talk freely.

That sucks to hear man :( I can't submit a ticket either, keep getting "Sucuri CloudProxy - Backend Server timeout".

I PMed you instead. Take your time, I sent the email from another account.

  • Deadpoled?

Yeah it's doing this thing where it times out but it still submits the ticket. It's really weird. I think I might have taken the attack to Sucuri, because I've restarted the web server and we're talking 0.01 load on this server right now.

Definitely. Please spread the word, nothing left to attack :)

Even the almighty jarland is prone to attacks.

  • Look, the only down thread I've given a shit about.

@jarland glad to see you've got it mostly resolved

Thanks for the love guys. Rough morning as I went to church and the attacks started immediately. I've had so many problems with constant DDOS protection that I've been without it and only using a backup plan to get back online quickly in the event. I stand by my Plan A, but my Plan B needs to be better, and I think that's what I've outlined today.

I will, however, begin working on a Plan C.

Unfortunately, I'm confident this was a customer who felt that not having DDOS protection was poor planning on my part and wanted to prove it. I can't prove that, it's just several variables that make it a fairly logical conclusion. I hope that customer enjoys the incoming spam today as I've globally whitelisted the filter IPs in SpamAssassin, there is no such thing as spam today....it's all whitelisted to prevent SPF failure.

I'm amazed that someone would do that to prove a point to a $10/year email host.

Thanks for having an announcement up before even I found out about it. I didn't check it as the first thing because no host really updates that lol.

In the future, in events like this, would it be possible for MxRoute to send these announcements via email? At the email addresses that people used to sign up at MxRoute, the one that is most likely not hosted at MxRoute?

Even my email was down so probably not. I'd recommend following on twitter.

It's a bit concerning that my backup MX has the same IP address, so I thought I would bring this up.

Please do not try to make this day worse for me. I beg you. I'm happy to discuss anything in private but I really don't want to be waving a flag here right now saying "attack here."

Apparently the wrong thing. I didn't realize he had such a problem with me asking for hookers and cocaine.

Your hooker is here, the cocaine is extra and you have to buy from pimp daddy AKA Aldryic.

Yeah. Snort some cocaine and party with hookers. Let the problem resolve itself. /jk

I too have found this concerning. I wonder how hard it is to set up your own backup queueing SMTP server. Maybe MailCheap supports backup SMTP like MXRoute does.

HackedServer said: I wonder how hard it is to set up your own backup queueing SMTP server

Not difficult. A little more difficult when you realize that you have to set up multiple layers of filtering as a result or you receive significant complaints about the quality of email coming in through it. Then you get complaints about delays introduced by filter layers. Not impossible, just... still plenty of roadmaps ahead, never finished growing. Everything is super easy in theory, and even in practice for someone not doing it at the scale (and price point) that I am facing.

My focus has been on providing high-quality inbox delivery at affordable pricing while providing front-end software that is backed by a full-time staff, but want to continue to grow the product over time.

I assure you, nothing I do is without reason. Feel free to talk to me about the reasons, the troubles I've faced that led there, my plans for the future, etc.

I think my message came off in a way I didn't intend. I wasn't criticizing MXRoute or your choices. I was asking how hard would it be for me to set up my own backup SMTP queuing server that can receive incoming email (to my domains) while MXRoute is down, and then hand it off when MXRoute is back up. Or, alternatively, if MailCheap has the functionality to be solely a backup MX.

You know kinda like this: http://www.dnsmadeeasy.com/services/mailservices/backupemail/

Oh no I understand, it's cool. I just want to make it clear to anyone reading that I'm not lazy... there is a reason I do things. It may not always be apparent, but I'm happy to dive into them.

Eventually, our backup relays will be 24/7 implementations instead of reactively deployed. Right now I'm trying something a bit interesting that creates the same result in every case of issues we've had thus far, but still isn't what I'm going for long term.
