Moving cpanel shared host to LEB? What to do with email service?

So I have a handful of LEB lying around since I stumble upon this website. I mainly use them to host voip server, vpn proxy and backups....

I was reviewing what I have earlier today when my shared host send me a 'hey time to pay your bill soon' notice. It was on a 85$ yearly bill. I was quite happy with it as support was very quick and had only 2 issue over the course of 7 years. It may be a little bit expensive for some but I was hosting my aunt's company email there which was critical... Now I am just using it as casual hobby site and ~9 email account(3 imap that have been storing emails since 2003)

So I have been wondering if I can ditch the shared hosting, save those funds for more fun in leb and transfer the existing shared hosting to the few 128-2gb vps I horde. I can split the service, move the website easily and even play with haproxy. My main concern is what to do with emails as I understand maintaining a live email server can quite difficult for people who does not know what they are doing(me). I thought of google app before but it won't work as I have 4 domains and cost will be $$$, not to mention those 3 imap account I have that neither myself, sister or father wish to lose.

I am aware I will probably be waste a good amount of time and may lose the stability I enjoy previously but I recon this may be a good learning experience for myself.

So I was wondering if anyone can give me a few pointer what should I be looking for or please let me know if this is a terrible idea and stay with a shared host :)

Thanks!

You can use one google apps service on one domain and add the rest as aliases.
    See here: http://support.google.com/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=53295

I'm not sure how many aliases you can add but it works.

  • I use namecheap personal mail plan. I have been using it for six months and no problem. I have the $2.99/year plan and I'm very satisfied. Next, I will try rackspace mail service. It is $2 per account, minimum of $10/month. But it synchronizes calendar too. Good luck.

We offer business class email hosting powered by the Rackspace Cloud.

But anyway its way more fun to run websites on a little LEB than to get shared hosting with cPanel.

thanks for the replies, I am not sure if google apps is the right solution as I don't think they have the ability to import the existing mails, and didn't their beta ended now we have to pay for it? will have to make a deeper look.

I was more looking at the possibility of hosting them on a leb, as mentioned in the initial post to make those leb 'useful'. Am aware it is much complicated then basic web server. But if all things fail I will def take a look at namecheap or perhaps just scrap the idea.

@shovenose thanks for the offer but seems like it is overkill for my needs/budget.

What about find a cheaper shared hosting? Some providers here provides CPanel with good rates. Sorry if not inline with your original question. I am just lazy and want fast solution.

  • as you aware that maintaining mail server can be quite difficult, you can try to install free control panel such as kloxo, ispconfig or webmin to your vps. cpanel or directadmin would be better but it's costly

  • I had the same problem half a year ago.
I did not need my shared hosting account (4 domains) because my LEB had 10 times of hdd space and my scripts (php/ruby) and the database were quite faster on the LEBs.
But I had a bad feeling about DNS and mail accounts.

I moved my domains to namecheap and jumped into the cold water. For my own domain (emails) I choosed the namecheap mail account and for the other domains I choosed (http://domains.live.com/) the free Microsoft mail hosting.
Last one buyed me some time to get in touch with email servers.
After some try&error (I used one of my boxes with a subdomain) I get used to configure my mail server the right way.

Afterwards I used Imapsync (http://imapsync.lamiral.info/) to copy my present mailboxes and finally cancel my shared hosting account.

And it is a good feeling to have my domains separated from any hosting or vps account.

    My actions:

    • Move domains to a dns hoster
    • Point every DNS entry to your shared hosting account
    • Use a vps you do not need (reinstalls needed) to install a mailserver
    • Map a MX entry for a subdomain (test.domain.com) to this vps
    • Change rDNS and hostname settings for this vps
    • Create a mailbox like [email protected]
    • Get in touch with fail2ban, iptables, backup
    • Get in touch with ASSP (http://sourceforge.net/projects/assp/)
    • Ensure that your vps ip address is cleared from your provider
    • Move one domain (MX) to your new mail server
    • Get comfortable with the system
    • Add mail accounts, let them use the mail server
    • Install mailserver again on your main LEB
    • Install backup mx mailserver on second LEB
    • Use imapsync
    • Change MX entries of your domains
    • Monitor your LEBs
    • Cancel your shared hosting account
    • Plan to write abuse mails once a month for all that "oh a smpt server on port 25 kiddies"

So yes I have my own mail server because I can handle my mail backups (Thunderbird). But I still use the Microsoft service for two domains, because I do not want to be responsible for the main email accounts of my family/friends.

Maybe I will move the Microsoft hosted mailboxes to my LEBs next year.

Mail server really isn't difficult. Getting the dns all set right so you're not always in the spam folder takes some learning, but setting it up and running it is quite easy.

  • Can always get a shared hosting plan from me, 1.99/mo, comes with spamassassin and other tools, cPanel of course.

  • bluevm has really cheap cpanel hosting - https://www.bluevm.com/shared.php

  • bluevm plans are cheap! great!

  • Hmm that's really cheap! anyone used blueVM for cPanel? how is the service?

We had a 50% OFF cPanel Hosting sale earlier if you're interested. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/93398 -- I'll enable the coupon for another day (note the price there included 10% GST for Australians).

    $1.5USD/month - 5GB disk, 50GB bandwidth

  • @concerto49

Thanks for the offer :) actually I don't really need shared hosting but the, $5/yr from BlueVM looks interesting . The last time I had a $5/yr shared hosting they went kaput within the year.. funny enough the co. was named kerplunc hosting haha..

I guess I will join this bandwagon.
    Have a look at: http://www.buysharedhosting.com/hosting.php

I think that will solve your worries about hosting your own mail server but because it is only monthly payments you can find your feet with your vps and cancel shared hosting easily.

BlueVM is reputable. I'm sure their offer will be great.

  • We've been offering the $5 / year shared hosting for a while now. It's stable and well worth the cost in my opinion. Ticket replies are usually under 12 hours, if you need a fast reply to a quick question or need an update about something IRC is available.

didn't expect so much offer/suggestions came out so shortly, thanks again really appreciated it.

@sphere a CP was considered for quick account building and modification + my limited experience but kloxo is kinda out of the question. may consider ispconfig or even zpxxxx for testing.

@wlanboy Thanks for sharing your experience and glad you were successful! I think I will go going something similar route... grab a cheaper but good shared hosting and slowly move mail accounts to the vps for the learning experience..... don't put family email into my management(learned it the hard way when one have to support people in asia).

I think I already have service with Front range hosting so I am going to pass on the shared offer.

@shovenose something is wrong with your website.. it is not loading.

@BlueVM I think I am sold on your shared offering, any chance of the 5$ / year plan being restock?

I recall setting up dovecot and Exim when I was initially learning linux 8 years ago... what is the common service people install now? I was thinking about dovecot postfix Dspam(or ASSP) +clam.

  • @belinik - PM me or hop on IRC and I'll set you up with an account... We're doing some maintanance on our systems right now and don't want to add new customers to the confusion. cPanel is already moved so there'd be no confusion there...
