General What would be your perfect rented dedi?

I am just doing some research for fun and was wondering what people are looking for. I am probably not going to do anything with these results as I love marketing on its own already.

The specs have to be realistic and possible to buy, this is about a commercial server, not something like a homeserver and a good rule of thumb is 2500 euros max.

Here are just a few samples for some inspiration:

Configuration 1
CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1230v2
RAM: 32GB ECC
4x 1TB Barracuda
LSI MegaRAID with 512MB cache and BBU
Sammy 840 Pro
IPMI

Configuration 2
CPU: Intel i7 extreme 6 core
RAM: 64GB non-ECC
4x 4TB Hitachi
LSI MegaRAID with BBU and 512MB cache
Sammy 840 Pro

Configuration 3
CPU: AMD FX-8350 (8x 4Ghz)
RAM: 32GB ECC unregistered
HP RAID with 512MB cache and BBU
4x 2TB Barracuda

Configuration 4
CPU: 2x Intel Xeon L5420
RAM: 24GB ECC
HP RAID with 512MB cache and BBU
4x 500GB Hitachi

Popular locations
1. United Kingdom (especially Maidenhaid)
2. Netherlands (especially Amsterdam)
3. US East Coast (especially Atlanta)

Standard nodes that I am switching to and love:
    E3 1245v2
    32gigs of FB ram
    4x1TB RE4's
    LSI 9620 with BBU
    1x120GB SSD

The configuration is powerfull enough for my needs and cheap enough to fit into my margins. Hopefully I will start migrate some of my customers to this type of a node.

Good morning Jarland, are you still staying with your in-laws?

@NHRoel If by staying with you mean they're still 15 miles away ;)

  • @jarland said: 15 miles away ;)

    Explains your hippy response :P

Why waste money on integrated graphics (that's what the 5 stands for) which also uses 8watts extra!

    @BronzeByte

You are absolutely correct, the exact model is not desided yet, however I would not spend the extra money for 1270/1290 and will go with either 1230 or 1240, ivy bridge :)

I am actually waiting on a quote for that hardware right now, we will see what I get.

I don't know of many DS Providers in Manchester, BurstNET isn't really budget or good...

  • @NHRoel said: This is your home server? DAMN!

Google has offered several millions for this server, but they ain't getting it. It's all about stacking and ducktape bro ;-) Just connect the HyperTransport bridges together with ducktape and it will detect multiple sockets!

A fully loaded MicroCloud . Not sure what exactly I'd want to do with it, other than put it to some sort of good use.

Make it 1Tbit unmetered with 1 ET of RAID-0, and it sounds sexy.

  • 4x16 core (intel if possible, amd if not)
    8x 2tb SAS disks
    1x 512GB SSD
No hardware raid... hardware raid is a bitch.
    256+ gb ram
    4x gbit/s ethernet unmetered

Total cost would be about $5000+. I could see asking $750/mo for it.

  • Configuration 2
CPU: Intel i7 extreme 6 core

    this is awesome!!

  • As long as it's free I'd be happy.
