KVM VPS or Dedi with 500 GB HDD

Hi,

a friend of mine is looking for a box for downloading "Linux ISOs".

Something with

  • ~ 500 GB HDD
  • unlimited traffic (or something close to that)
  • no OpenVZ virtualisation
  • edit: preferably based in Europe
  • for ~ 10 € per month

Yes, I gave him that look too.

The only suitable candidates we've found so far are Online.net's Dediboxes SC/XC 2015/16 (most of which are currently out of stock) and Contabo (which has some rather troubling reviews).

Do you guys/girls have any other suggestions or perhaps insights when the Dediboxes will be available again?

Why doesn't "your friend" like OVZ? I have boxes that download and upload "Linux ISOs" on OpenVZ and no issue thus far. You'll also drive the price down by being open to it.

@dailymc The no OpenVZ requirement is actually the only requirement that I set. I'll probably be the one to set up that server and I want to be able to use custom filesystems (for dm-crypt, sshfs, etc.).

The truth is that as long as you aren't constantly putting the machine under load (unless it's dedicated), you aren't maxing out the port assigned to you, and they aren't having to deal with copyright notices (which isn't an issue you'll have with private Linux ISO's) then you'll be fine with any reliable provider that provides those specs.

  • ucxoucxo Member

@dailymc I know that load and legal issues shouldn't be much of a problem, I just can't find any providers (other than the two mentioned) that offer that amount of disk space cheap enough. ;)

Oh, except Kimsufi, but I don't want to have to report broken hardware via a forum

They have 41 USD per year.... For 1 tb of storage

    Hello,

Considering the disk space and the future use of the server, i advice your friend to look after à dedi but he has to increase his budget.

For example the first server we could offer you starts at 19.99€/mo

    Crazy Fish

    Intel xeon 3000

    4Gb

    1Tb

    100 mbits unmetered

Where are you seeing that? The offers on their website cost about four times that...

He probably meant their 1TB OpenVZ $45/year, and not KVM. They used to offer 800GB storage KVM with unmetered bandwidth for $7-10 too, but that isn't available for a long time.

Not exactly, your requirements are quite strict, you should probably raise your budget or lower bandwidth expectations.

I think he meant that the virtualization requirement was the only one he set (while the others were set by his friend) by adding KVM to the list of specs his friend gave him.

Oh yeah, I see it now. I've been wrong. But it doesn't change the fact that the request in whole looks hard to find.

We can do the following plan:

    Storage VPS-2

    2GB Memory

    500GB Storage

    2 vCPU Fair Use

    5TB Bandwidth

    Xen HVM Virtualization

Once you start making actual estimates (instead of blind wishes), things start to look slightly more reasonable. ;)

We are not in your preferred area (we're US based), but you may still want to consider our storage instances starting at $7/month for 500GB at https://mnx.io/pricing

    These guys? https://www.zxhost.co.uk/storage.html
I think not as their price are in pounds (they are in UK) and their 1TB offer costs 15 pounds/month... please give correct URL if it's indeed someone else.

You got the wrong URL, it should be this one for the LET-specific offers: https://zxhost.co.uk/let.html

Thanks! Do you know whether they accept bitcoin? No info at the page...

  • Get two kimsufis if you want 24/7 uptime.

    Dm-crypt + torrents will be hammering cpu +iops on a low-end vps.

I was going to suggest kimsufi due to prices but i saw that posting in forums to get hardware changed comment and i cringed! i think your best bet is to get a decent yearly deal. I think the fact that you want 500GB of KVM storage is gonna be tough. i did a lot of research and now i know why your posting here for help haha good luck man!

EDIT: i found this ? http://www.register.it/server/configurator.html?product=DS2DS431 dont ask me anything about them i have no idea who they are maybe other users can help you out with things such as networks etc.
