12GB RAM Dedicated Server in LA for $39. Just bought one

I was browsing through WHT earlier and I noticed this deal: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1240008

Seemed a good deal for

Intel Xeon E5520
12 GB RAM
500 GB Hard Drive
100 Mbps Dedicated Unmetered
$39.99/month

So I've just ordered one (+5 extra IPs) which brought it to $44.99. I've spoken to them on live chat and they said set up time is between 8 and 24 hours after verification.

Just posted it on here as it seems to be the best value $39 dedi I've seen in a while. Some negative reviews on PerfectIP but they seem to be legitimate enough; I'll keep you all updated.

I've heard good and bad things about PerfectIP. Let us know how it goes.

  • Wow, sounds interesting. More powerful than my desktop here at home! Do let us know when it's provisioned, speed, etc. I like that they have a /120 IPv6 block for $1.

  • Well this is interesting, they're asking for my government-issued ID...

i believe they do this for all orders

  • Ooooh, 100mbps unmetered, 12GB, dedicated, nice CPU, sweet!

LIRs give /48's for $50 one time processing fee...

I was just looking at their $59 1230V2 but haven't ordered yet because of this thread (thread summary- support sucks)

    http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1238699&highlight=perfectip

"they seem to be legitimate enough"

positive, own IP space: AS22439, peering with HE, Telia, Cogent for both ipV4 and ipV6

negative: the address on their WHOIS is a 2-bedroom condo
    http://www.trulia.com/homes/California/Los_Angeles/sold/22138758-801-S-Grand-Ave-1204-Los-Angeles-CA-90017

edit: they must have changed their name at some point because Robtex (the masters of old stale data) is showing AS22438 as CAT-CATWORKS-NET C.A.T. Computers, Inc. Same peering.
    http://as.robtex.com/as22439.html

edit again: they used to be called vrtservers.net (that domain now forwards to perfectip.net) before changing their name in 2010. Lots of old negative reviews on WHT for vrtservers. Same 2-bedroom condo WHOIS.

  • I've told them I'm happy to sign their service agreement document but not scan my ID. I'm not comfortable with any 3rd party, especially an online-only business holding something such as a copy of my passport. I've offered them a scan of of my bank card or a full refund. We'll see how this goes

  • @DomainBop - that graphic is fancy...

Hahaha look at the warning at the bottom though: WARNING! 46% (46/100) of the sites on CAT-CATWORKS-NET C.A.T. Computers, Inc. (as22439) is pornographic or otherwise sensitive content!

  • @BronzeByte said: LIRs give /48's for $50 one time processing fee...

HE gives you 5 /48ss (per account) for $0. You don't own them and they're not native, but still.

Many give out free /112s (Prometeus and EDIS, for instance) or even /64s (Prometeus on request, Linode on request).

If I recall they have a pretty tight policy on the max IPs per server. Considered them for a node but was turned off by it.

Edit: they are also $2 each

Yep as per comments above I can confirm this is actually a pretty lousy policy and I would even say profiteering from trying to sell air.

    06/28/2006 Sold $1,050,000 Public record

Now worth $360k ? USA housing market eh.

We give out /48s free in Austria on request ;)

Google "vrtservers" and look at the results. Nice looking deal but I don't like what I see. Wholesale Internet is also having a $39 sale, I suggest hopping on that train.

    http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1239953 - 100mbit unmetered, unquestionably legit provider.

  • Oh sigh, looks like I could've walked myself into some issues. Been nearly an hour since I emailed them and no cigar. Anyone able to get through to their live chat?

Assuming that all of the bad information about them that google reveals is wrong, I'd expect them to be a little backed up with that kind of offer. Even if you cut off stock, good luck cutting off an avalanche of presales inquiries with that thread live on WHT. I'd give them a few hours.

  • @jarland True; I'm just a bit annoyed that they've called me up like this. Fully verified PayPal with attached bank account + verified address; never had anything like this before. Like I said, my final offer to them is a scan of my bank card, hopefully this will get sorted soon

Same here, and LeaseWeb suspended my account the other day pending "correct account information" until I e-mailed them the exact information I entered at order. I think we all get too used to how the usual LEB circle does things, gets annoying stepping outside of it.

"Assuming that all of the bad information about them that google reveals is wrong,"

I'm assuming the 6 years of bad info about vrtservers is right and that they changed their name to perfectip in 2010 to try and erase their history and get a fresh start

"I think we all get too used to how the usual LEB circle does things, gets annoying stepping outside of it.

Almost all of the dedicated server providers I've dealt with over the past 15 years have required photo IDs and/or copies of utility bills, etc. BudgetVM even required photo ID last week because I triggered their fraud alert during checkout (the trigger happened because the IP detection on their checkout was screwed up. When I checked out the IP address shown in the "your IP is being recorded" message was the IP address of their billing server not my IP address. LOL)

  • I e-mailed sales, awaiting answer now, kinda weird that they couldnt answer on the forum post

  • @DomainBop Hmm, never had this issue with OVH, CommercialMedia or i3D. Guess it's just one of those scenarios; I'm hoping this all clears up

@BronzeByte Please update us as to when you get a reply :)

Well, assigning people a job in billing requires a lot more trust and responsibility than sales

  • @jarland said: Wife is gonna kill me.

I thought for sure you and @halfeatenpie bought that already :)
What makes it more tempting is they also give you free IPMI..
