Finland - What do you think?

deployvmdeployvm Member, Host Rep
edited April 2016 in General

The main question is: What do you think about Finland?

Would you trust your data there?

  • Of course, assume RAID 10 protection.
  • Considering privacy, freedom of content etc.

Do you have an interest in having a virtual presence there?

  • Having a website or VPS hosted.
  • Build a CDN, personal site, DB processing, anything.

For those who pay attention to IT news, we know that Hetzner is building a data-centre in Finland and may reduce the price of business services!

Would you choose Finland hosting over Sweden or other Scandinavian regions?
Long debate, many people think there's no real difference! Within 10ms of each other.

Price?

  • LEB pricing/ KVM virt.
  • Perhaps 1TB traffic by default.
  • 1Gbps shared speeds
  • Native IPv6
  • DNA Oy + FNE Finland as upstreams + public peering at IXs.

So expect high quality transit, with carriers such as Telia, Level3, ReTN.

/discuss if you wish.

Just sign the right contract with a service provider, and the pricing can be very reasonable :)

You do not want to know the price of traffic in Iceland!
6EUR to 9EUR/Mbps depending on commit (from 10Mbit to 100Mbit 95%-tile). Asked already quite a few ISPs already.

In Sweden, there are too many hosting providers, don't you think?

Sweden will be much cheaper .... like you said 10 or 20ms diff is not that big and lets see what prices you'll bring :)

Well, yes, of course. You have like Tele2, IP-Only etc, which do 0.6EUR-2EUR/Mbps for traffic depending on commits.

    Thanks!

  • Finland would be a nice location..

Stockholm is much better connected and is closer to everything -- Finland is not just "10ms difference", it's 10ms more, and for everyone (except those in Finland itself), for no good reason. Freedom and privacy-wise there doesn't seem to be a lot of benefit in Finland compared to Sweden. Speaking of which, XHostFire seems to be a US company, so it all makes no difference anyway.

Yes, that's all true, and understand completely.. but it's 10ms more for any other location.

Between Stockholm, Tallinn, Riga to Helsinki, it's within 10ms.

In the case of Oslo, Copenhagen, yes, expect more than 15-20+ms.

    Not 100% accurate.
If you do ping example, from Estonian ip to Finnish Creanova, you will get avg. ping 60ms.
Everything that is connected with TeliaSonera and other major providers, will do the 10ms indeed.

My context is based on the upstreams I've mentioned.

I have no regard for Creanova's single-homed ReTN network, but you are correct there.

I think you should also target the local market with this location. There is certainly a lack of cheap offers there.

They also speak very good English, so it should be easier.

I'm skeptical anyone cares about this.

If it's for torrenting, those are valid concerns but it's better to look for the famous "DMCA ignored hosting".

If you're fighting for justice, freedom, and truth, then there are a million places to host your fist-pumping screeds. Unless it's child porn or something like that, I defy you to show me political content you can't host in the plain' ol USA.

If you're Wikileaks, you need special consulting anyway and just picking a country is not sufficient.

Thanks everyone for their . It's much appreciated. We have finally deployed a Finnish location and launched an offer for users on LET :)

True to our word, we have provided 1TB traffic and 1Gbps connection.

We do not have any interest in such content nor should affect any general mechanisms.

If you're simply using online services for usual purposes, there is no need to worry.

  • I would choose Norway instead Finland/Sweden, because of European Union law (Norway isn't member of European Union).

Norwegian providers are easy to find and cost-effective. :) I've gotten great deals there before.
I would like to work in a more interesting market, so Finland was a clear choice for us.

Formally yes, but physically they have many similar laws and rules with EU and depends them.

Do not forget about Finland and Sweden not a NATO members and still refuse membership instead all others.
