What can a 128mb RAM VPS do?

Was just interested with what a 128mb RAM can do? I know for a fact that it can be used to host websites.. But what else?

I mean can this be used for seedbox? VPN?
I honestly dont have an idea of its purpose other then hosting it for websites, well im also really not quite that sure if a 128mb ram is indeed enough to host a website..

  • Another one of these threads.
Someone must do a FAQ or kinda...

IRC, VPN, proxy, maybe torrents, DNS, monitoring other boxes, learning.

Web site, vpn, flash streaming server, lots of awesome things :)

  • @yomero well if you list down all the things you know that can be used for a 128mb ram then i will proceed on making a faq for this yeah? :)

  • @jarland flash streaming server --- is this leb enough though? I dont think so?

  • I have been running FreeVPS.us on a 96mb VPS from ServerDragon/ddosprotect.us since October. It ran fine with 64mb ram, but I upgraded to the 96mb plan because it was cheaper than just buying extra disk space, and I wanted to be able to install updates without stopping the php and mysql first.

    On 1 128mb kvm VPS I have:
2 VPNs (pptp and openvpn), authoritative dns, proxies (ssh -D) and 1 ovz vps for my 2 vpn's dns resolver

@Simple3x Yep crtmp totally works on 128mb with plenty to spare.

Most i put on an 128 (in the same time):
3 types of VPN (OpenVPN, PPTP, Squid)
1 small forum (phpbb) and mail server
1 teamspeak server (max 30 or so users, most of the time below 10)
All the other prerequisites (btw, was LAMP :P)
It had no problems, at times was below 50 MB usage.
Unlike other people, I am not particularly interested on how much i can cram in a small space, at today prices I prefer to pay 50 cents more for 128 than 64 and get more space, more cpu and more traffic.

crtmpd very low memory. can fit even 32mb.

edit: also try icecast and ices for streaming music

  • @Maounique wow i bet your vps is crying if it was a horse, isn't that too overloaded?
I mean you run it all on a single leb?

On one of my VPSs to go from 96mb to 128mb the price would go from $38.99/year to $8.99/month.

    thats expensive for 128mb

OP, freevps.us is a MyBB forum, so it's actually a pretty intensive site as LEBs go.

65 users active in the past 15 minutes (3 members, 1 of whom is invisible, and 59 guests).

  • Hey guys, so is a 128mb ram enough for a VPN service?

With plain OpenVPN or PPTP, more than enough.

  • What can't a 128mb RAM VPS do?

  • Plenty.

I'm running openvpnas which is using less than that.

  • @TheHackBox Like how many users can it accommodate?

Any VPS will be able to do VPN as long as you have some traffic left.
You can do a tunnel with ssh/putty and use it as a socks proxy. Most come with openssh already installed, so you wont need to even login at the CLI.

I run PPTP on a 32MB VPN from ServerDragon.

  • A 50mb could do this :

    • OpenVPN
    • PPTPD
    • Looking Glass
    • Wordpress Blog
    • A backup server
    • Monitoring server using Uptime script from fazanio
    • Rapidleech server for easy backup from other server
    • Munin server
    • Squid proxy
