Kidechaire's - interesting things to use them for?

Currently mine are running:

1x Web host
1x Email host
1x Seedbox

What else can I use them for?

I was thinking:

VPN
IRC Bouncer
Linux ISO Mirror
OwnCloud

Anyone know any interesting self hosted apps or Open Source projects that would be fun playing with?

Thanks!

Let's see... All of mine are in a Tinc VPN mesh, running:

    • Proxy server for general browsing (Squid)
    • Reverse proxy to share stuff from home (Squid as well)
    • Uptime monitoring (custom script)
    • IRC bouncer (ZNC)
    • IRC bots (custom)
    • Web servers (Lighttpd) with dokuwiki, tt-rss, Piwik, etc.
    • Database (MySQL) for Piwik and tt-rss
    • OpenArena master-server for IPv6 (dpmaster)
    • Mail servers (Postfix)
    • Jabber IM server (Prosody)
    • DNS resolvers (Unbound)
    • Each has 140+ GB free disk space, so also stores backups (rsync+encfs)

They are the best thing since ever. What do you do with them? -- as you can see: everything.

  • @rm_ - Thanks for the serious reply.

I like the idea of a Squid proxy, especially since work loves to restrict access to things...

I already run a PDNS cluster on VPS's elsewhere, so i'll skip using them for DNS for now (I would love to use them for DNS + Backup MX - but as they're all in the same DC it's not a good idea.)

  • @rm_ Tinc looks interesting too.

Is it just an open source alternative to something like Hamachi?

    Yes like

    is "just" an alternative to

  • @rm_ - So i'm taking that to mean its quite a bit better? In what way?

    • Make a mirror for a distro that don't have too much mirrors? The arm ones maybe? or arch? or the new ones that popup quite often...

    • Run a free streaming hosting service

    • ask @William if he needs a few hundreds Mbps for a project

Tinc is a free software decentralized failure-resilient automatic full-mesh Layer 2 VPN daemon. It's a fine program on it's own, it doesn't need to be reduced to "just" an alternative to some proprietary POS. Do you also go around saying "GNU/Linux is just an open-source alternative to something like Windows"?

On the other hand "Hamachi" is basically a toy "vpn" for gamers to play with their school friends in games which don't have a native online mode.

As for better in which ways, one is the most important: it's free software and open source, which means its encryption implementation is public, so it can be reviewed and trusted, unlike proprietary encryption which maybe fit for games, but nothing more.

  • I just cancelled 1 of 2 kidechires. Currently using it as an OwnCloud server
