Hi, I was reading the thread that someone was selling Vultr credit https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/78224/selling-155-vultr-credit#latest

but I'm not interested in doing the Same with Digitalocean, lol. So I was thinking that given that I don't use the funds I have, maybe I can provide root access to a $5 droplet to someone. or if you have a better idea, just send me a pm!.

I got the credit because of a github student pack promotion awhile ago, but I never used it. And given that I don't really need a vps besides for openvpn, maybe someone could give it a better use.

tell me what you think!.

  • Damn... VPS giveaway! How much credis do you have?

    Noble behavior!

  • I have around $70, that's good for around 15 months of a $5 droplet.

Well... I have few VPSes, so I don't need more, but you should know that you are generous :)

If you give away a free VPS on your account, you will be responsible for what they do with it.

Keep that in mind. Especially potential legal implications.

Yeah I know, that's why I'm thinking giving it to someone who won't use it for production or something like that. Maybe something non-essential like an irc bouncer or similar.

I think your concern should be more around someone using it as a spam launching point.

Your best bet would be to sell this for Bitcoins requiring a 3 or 6-month deposit upfront -- even if at DO's same $5/month without markup. This way someone who can't use Paypal or Credit cards can still get a DO VPS if they need one. And by requiring an upfront payment you eliminate many of the potential abuse issues.

HOWEVER I see that this is your first thread and the first 3 posts on this forum -- so I doubt if anyone will trust you enough to pre-pay a significant amount. Now if you'd been registered for a longer period with a lot of posts, then this could have worked.

Well it's a good idea, though I'm not asking for money. I don't use the funds so I thought someone would give it better use.

Also, it's not the first time I'm around here. I had a previous account but I forgot the password and I don't have access to the email linked to that account anymore. Maybe the mods can help me with that?.

So I'm not an stranger. lol

  • You could seed some open source torrents or mirror some projects!

To bridge the time until you found someone, that you can give it to without to much of a risk, you could burn some credits on: http://archiveteam.org/

And by the way, DO is very accommodating in this case - still got a few bucks left in my account and due to their TOS change more than a year ago it should have already gone. ;)

Not particularly, at least not the same kind of abuse that comes to mind for me. Trusting random strangers who take a short term free VPS is a risk I personally wouldn't take. This is someone who knows that they can do anything and they won't be personally responsible.

Take, for example, child porn. Think of the risks of someone doing that on a server that has your PayPal or credit card on file as the only record of ownership.

  • I only just finished wasting my own DO credit :P

  • @synthwave88

While it is a noble idea, it is not a practical one.

Like has been mentioned before, use to support Open Source Software or other similar endeavors.

  • Sure can use it for some learning project. PM sent!

Does this credit from the github thing still expire soon if you didn't use it up?

I want to have the credits if you can offer a way to create snapshots and launch/destroy droplet (for suspending charges). My project will take time to build so I won't need it on 24/7 while working on it. So basically I need some access to panel. Let me know if possible.

Thanks for your nice offer and goodluck whoever wins this :)

Github Student Pack is only $50, so apparently the OP got more elsewhere or it was his own money.

I thought GSP offered more earlier, like $75, but I see it's $50 now.

If you are a student and have edu email, you can apply to promotional code on existing account. I did it before and got $100 credit.

Only works if you've never added a promo, including $10 referral credit.

I have $14.75 in credits, I guess I could offer up some a month or two if anyone wants since it's been years since I've used them (pm).

I still have $42.97 in DO without adding any funds since last year. The fund will be automatically increase into my account due to the referral link. I think DO is good in marketing and also really paid out the referral fees.

    Referral Earnings: $185.00 (Still Pending)

I still have 1 active droplet in DO.
