    They have all the standards, Debian, Centos, Ubuntu etc.

    They really like Ubuntu server (its the default) but you can pick something else, not a TON of choices but the main ones are available.

    One important thing to note is a droplet installed from the Ubuntu Server template will come with a 3.5 kernel, whereas installed from Debian will have 2.6.32. And there is no way to change a kernel or install your custom one in their system yet (even though it is KVM).

    They just run your image with a kernel that's external to it, KVM can do that

    $ kvm --help | grep kernel
    ...
    -kernel bzImage use 'bzImage' as kernel image
    -append cmdline use 'cmdline' as kernel command line
