Where's the line?

Hey guys,

Just got this e-mail from CVPS... Seriously, these deals are just getting silly.

$3.25/month? How can anybody cram this into a server? The IP's alone must come close to that cost. Nevermind the resources. Where will the line be drawn?

I wouldn't like to comment - ridiculous as it looks they might have a way of doing it profitably.

  • If that package was doubled... :o

    5GB Dedicated RAM
    120GB RAID-10 Protected Diskspace
    4000GB Monthly Bandwidth
    4x IPv4 Addresses
    $6.50/month.

    That would be ridiculous...

  • @eastonch said: The IP's alone must come close to that cost.

IPs for them probably costs $0.20USD/IP/month or less.

  • Order link please :D

  • So... LEB pricing for a superbox? @NickO

@Jhadley cramming people in? Maybe they just found a shit load of servers in a truckstop and decided to take it for themselves. :X

  • Awesome! Just make sure to keep your own offsite backups!

  • @eastonch said: So... LEB pricing for a superbox?

    :D

    happy

  • I grabbed their recent 2GB LEB deal ($7) with cPanel for +$10.

I must say that I have been happy with it.

    "ONLY $3.25 per month!"

They increased their price per GB of RAM to $1.30!

Their Black Friday special was only $1.25 per GB: ($2.50 per month for 2GB.)

  • Give me 1TB of disk space and we'll talk ^^.

  • Seems to me like they are nearly bancrupt and need some quick cash

  • Must not have been happy about people undercutting them :P

  • Thank you @eastonch, I thought they offer monthly payment, I don't want to stick with yearly payment because most company offer only 30 days moneyback, when 30 days pass, there is no way to get money back if their service is going to... suck...

  • Forseen the future guys. "Cheap VPS Overlord goes bankrupt and owes $1.5Million to debitors"

With OpenVZ there is no line. I just tried this & it worked.

    [root@host ~]# free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 3804 3761 42 0 44 3432
    -/+ buffers/cache: 284 3519
    Swap: 3951 26 3925
    [root@host ~]# vzctl set 201 --ram 1024G --save
    UB limits were set successfully
    CT configuration saved to /etc/vz/conf/201.conf
    [root@host ~]# vzctl enter 201
    entered into CT 201

    [root@lvm-fedora-16-x86-64 /]# free -m
total used free shared buffers cached

    logout
    exited from CT 201

    [root@lvm-fedora-16-x86-64 /]#

    Now I have a VM with mind-blowing spec. :D

I know very well that there is no way this VM is going to work to it's specified limits. But if OpenVZ allows this then one can easily guess how much overselling is possible. :)

  • Ah, that explains why the node in Buffalo that I'm on is ultra super duper slow at the moment. Took 2 minutes to login over ssh, text shows up half a minute later.

@gsrdgrdghd said: Seems to me like they are nearly bancrupt and need some quick cash

    Agreed. Deadpool soon?

  • What if it's just lowering water to expose the rocks? None of us are going to make it selling the exact same thing as everyone else at the exact same price.

FFS! Host1free was a rocket compared to that...

  • 12 Month Price - $3.25 USD

    Oh, come on.

  • Will anyone actually take this up? I understand people trying the $7 deal because although it sounds almost too good to be true, if performance isn't acceptable you can just cancel. Is anyone prepared to stump up just shy of $40 though?

  • @CVPS_Chris what is going on?

I have to agree with you, I think all this "low end" providers shipping off RAM for around $1/gig is way too far, I don't see how that's profitable, even if the support is non-excisant.

My thinking goes, I'd rather sell 2GB/RAM for $40, than selling 20GB RAM at these prices.

@biplab But what happens when the node is completely oversold, and the VM is basically unusable, and the Paypal dispute window has passed?

Funny. What about your 'UNLIMITED SSD STORAGE'? Last time I checked, there is no unlimited disk drives available.

As long as service is sustainable and end users don't see a downgrade in performance it's fine, whether it's the case here or not with CVPS I don't know.

@Patrick Unlimited is a buzz word, used by people like me to sell more, in reality, the dedicated server that my hosting runs on is completely empty.

I've had good experiences with CVPS, I don't know what you're talking about.
