Thoughts on WAMP.
Hey guys.
Just set my new laptop up and installed WAMP onto it, since i'm going in for a Computing Degree in September; I thought I best have some form of local dev environment.
First impressions are nice; really nicely laid out, some lovely dev tools and MySQL, PMA, PHP all built in and configured without stress.
Just wondering if anybody has used this before and what they think? It's a nice windows alternative to what I'm used to, Linux Wise.

no mayne. learn to set up your own stack
I've heard only good things about WAMP, so it must be easy! Good luck with your degree.
@Fly I was going to' but the simplicity of a simple .exe was much more appealing than playing with loads of applications .
@Divinite Thanks.

Site looks great too!
I don't see why you would need WAMP for a computer science degree but other than that it's great for quickly trying out PHP things. Just make sure to never use it in a production environment
I use it for testing things. Ive had no issues at all. Never used it for a live website but its great for testing
My first trial with webserver in 1999
We can also try XAMPP
Have used it, cant say which one is better i.e. XAMPP or WAMP, thought I think XAMPP has more features
@gsrdgrdghd
The first year has alot of 'foundation' elements for computing, involving web server scripting etc. I expect to be asked to make a site once I've looked at the spec for this years...
I'd personally just spin up a VM on virtualbox for this kind of work.
@ShardHost for me to do that on my Laptop would be a bit OTT :S
Why? Just a small VM. Its better than running a web server + MySQL database on your day to day OS, that I would say is OTT. You will find with WAMP running in many network environments (such as a university) you may lose access to network services.
What uni are you planning on going to?

XAMMP is very bloated.
@eastonch Prefer http://bitnami.org/stacks
It's amazing, used it before and will use it again.
Just came across Uniform Server.
Souncs quite nice. Will give it a try, when I have the time.
