I need to find an abordable VPS, preferably in Canada (Quebec/Ontario), if not, noth America
Presenting myself and my usage case:
Hi, I am a student in electronics and computing. I want to get myself a VPS so I may do all my test, experimentation, development, learning unix system administration, hosting my website with my CV and my project, maybe doing a vpn/proxy for private usage, maybe hosting a private minecraft server and an irc for me and and few friend (2-10 people). I may also use it as a server for internet of thing project and for application server if I develop some application that require a server, again, for small population. Another usage case is for git/mercurial/svn for my development.
Web development will be made in node.js, ruby on rail, django, meteor.js and all other fun stuff. MAYBE some php, but php start to be boring these year with all new technology.
MySQL, MongoDB, postresql.
Since I won't do everything at the same time, I don't think I will need high resource.
Budget and minimum requirement
Since all what I do will be low traffic, I don't think I will need huge resource. I have a limited budget, so less than 100$ CAD per year, so if your offer is in US, do the conversion to ensure it fit my CAD budget. I want to get under 100$, as far away as possible, I don't want to pay 100$ if i can pay 50$. I want to pay annually to save over monthly.
My need : At least 512 MB ram (absolute minimum, preferably I want to get 1GB and more).
At least 15 GB storage, 100 GB bandwidth, an IPV4 IP. SSD storage would be great. High speed internet, I mean not worst internet than other similar solution (so reasonable time to upload/download a 1 GB file, not 30 min.)
Some additional note
So a VPS with almost no restriction as possible on usage (I am ok with restriction on usage regarding legal stuff of course, I don't want to make illegal activity). As much reliable of course. I won't do TOR or other suspicious thing like that.
Would be great if it could support some interesting OS like freebsd, archlinux, gentoo, slackware instead of just regular debian and ubuntu.
Possibility to scale up if needed.

this is some sort of SEO thread isnt it... or it will become one..
What is SEO?
Click on my fat evil affiliate link to ovh https://www.ovh.com/ca/en/vps/vps-ssd.xml
VPS SSD 1
$4.49 /month
Are price in CAD?
I like you.
Definite +1 for OVH. You're not going to find a better offer without spending a whole lot more, plus their Canadian datacenter is in Beauharnois, QC.
Are they pricing in CAD or US for OVH? because before i buy 4.5$ per month, i want to know in which currency it is.
EDIT : Yes, in CAD $.
That's the Canadian site, so it's CAD.
Are you Quebecois? There's a Quebec version of the site too: https://www.ovh.com/ca/fr/vps/vps-ssd.xml
Yes I am, but I don't need a french translation, I get good grade in my english class
Is there a way to increase storage on OVH? 10 GB SSD is a little bit short, and I don't want to pay for better vps plan just to get few GB more. Do they offer storage upgrade, and how much?
@Asgard20032 you can try https://hostedbilling.net/blesta/index.php, location Montreal, Canada
try a workaround with mounting free "cloud" storages over network. it just might work.
Oh, I didn't suggest that because your English is bad, but because OVH is a French company with offices in Quebec! They speak much better French than English. If I were fluent in French myself I'd use that site.
Check out LunaNode, offer both Toronto & Montreal. Pricing is USD, but many options under $100 CAD/yr. https://lunanode.com/pricing
USD pricing but well worth it as MyCustomHosting is a great provider. Their "LET-BF-2GB-20GB-2TB-Monthly" plan @5.00 per month = $60.00 per year USD. Convert this to CAD =$83.00 per year.
Since the value of CAD fluctuate negatively, i prefer to avoid USD for huge amount
What about deepnet solution? Are they good? Performance? OpenVZ vs KVM?
They have a NAT offering, is it good?
OVH or LunaNode. MCH is good but they do not use a pure SSD, but SSD-cached storage. It can also be noted that they use RAID-0. If you ok with that, check them too.
https://nexus-net.org/ We offer cheap VPS servers!
kihi.io may be up to par for you.
We've got interesting OS' for you to try (Atomic Host / CoreOS) and we'll be adding BSD distros soon.
If you're located near Kitchener/Waterloo it'll be incredibly low ping too
Pzzt. Doesn't even come close to the OP's requested budget, try again.
Open a sales ticket on my site and I could give you a yearly discount for a 2GB OpenVZ VPS that's under your budget.
OVH BHS all the way if you live in eastern Canada or NE USA.
For some of your project, I will not suggest you a NAT box. However, any of our dedicated IP VPS can suit your needs.

if you need any additional storage, you can sign up for the ovh public cloud and get the same vps at the same price, and then you can add all the storage you need
I cant find the same vps same price in public cloud. Cheapest public cloud is 53$ per month with like 32gb ram
Should i take kvm or openVZ? Is there some swap on your openVZ? What about your cpu power? I remember to saw something on your usage policy page about minecraft server, but it was unclear if i could or not do a small one. What about small irc and vpn for private usage to learn how to do vpn? (In a near future, i may need to create a vpn for a small buisiness (not on vps), so i need to learn how to set up one. Why i was asking about your company is also because i could not find any review or comparaison to other one.
Hi,
You can find review on this forum pretty easily.
Depending what you need, both our OpenVZ and KVM offers are working well. For our policies, you can find them right here: http://gdbi.pw/tos and http://gdbi.pw/aup
