Block advertising servers on SoftEther VPN server level

Dear LET,

I have an private SoftEther VPN server running and I'd like to block advertising servers on server level so that they won't load on the client side of clients connected to my VPN (mainly my devices only such as Android phones and computers).

So I am looking for a way to do this and maybe a service that offers updated lists of advertising servers that I can use with a cronjob to update my copy.

Is that possible? Do any of you have a guide to do this?

Thank you very much in advance.

Regards :)

    http://someonewhocares.org/hosts/

I've removed their comments from their lines a few weeks ago:

You'd need to find a way to update their host list, while removing their comments, if you like what they do. I use it on my proxy and openvpn servers, too, so I don't load crap either way with proxies or vpns.

  • Ah, I know that one from my uBlock Origin filter list. So I put that list up into my hosts file on the server and I'm fine?

For Squid I just use my recently added blacklist feature but couldn't find a similar function in SoftEther.

  • good luck

    @GM2015

It's not working. All the ads are still loading. The comments are not an issue as in my original file I already had comments starting with # generated by the SolusVM template bootstrap on installation.

However if I ping a domain from the list from the VPN server VPS it says 127.0.0.1. So I'm not sure why the ads are still loading.

I found https://github.com/nomadturk/vpn-adblock by nomad from here and I wonder if it's any better.

  • Strange. I use ublock origin and noscript on most of my devices. My android uses ublock plus ghostery, since couldn't find noscript for it to work.

If I must login somewhere where I can't, I go to a vm with a standard version of firefox(or if must, then chrome).

Chrome for Android unfortunately has no adblocking addons so I came up with the idea to block it on VPN server level but well no luck so far.

I get it. Looks like some of the ads that loaded up here are served locally... from the lowendtalk.com domain.

Try firefox. Ghostery+Ublock origin works from mozstore.

    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/android/addon/ublock-origin
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/android/addon/ghostery

I'm using adguard (vpn) and it blocks ads pretty well, or you can use firefox on android and add adblock to firefox.

I reverted back to Firefox with uBlock Origin. The blocking via hosts files didn't really work. Chrome could not connect to a single site with the hosts file having all the domains for some reason. Google Play was not even opening.

Reverted the hosts file back to the original and now everything is back to normal. Firefox is not that good though. Wish Chrome would support addons and that Android would stop being a dick about VPNs.

I generally can't downloading anything of Google Play with SoftEther's L2TP/IPSec VPN. No idea why. Browsing and all other appy work. Even Netflix works.

probably have a look into this:

    https://hugoheden.wordpress.com/2009/02/24/dnsmasq-and-etchosts/

depends on what setup you are using with softether though...

I'm operating a local bridge where DNSMasq acts as a DHCP server.

I use the same, so that's why thought about dnsmasq having issues with hosts file like mentioned above... maybe give it try by leaving that alone (nohosts in dnsmasq.conf) and using another file for dnsmasq where you'll put in your filtered entries from whatever blocklist...

  • Using DNS poisoning or do application level firewall like Transparent Proxy.

You should try Squid with SquidGuard as your transparent proxy, the only problem for this setup is HTTPS won't be filtered at transparent proxy level.

    No, but still thanks.

I'm using my own VPN server and don't need any transparent proxy or any other kind of proxy.

  • @jarland please lock this topic.

I resorted back to using Firefox with µBlock on Android. Blocking ad servers through hosts files or via dnsmasq isn't playing nice at all. I can't load sites at all with some browser.
