  • Windows is only good for domain controller active directory crap and SMB file sharing, Linux for everything else.

  • Windows if you need ASP.NET hosting and similar and of course as linuxthefish mentioned for a domain controller, active directory, Windows fileserver and ehm anything else that really requires Windows because it does not have native Linux binaries. Maybe also if you just have loads of money to throw.

    Linux - you can use it for everything else. Runs activate directory, too. Need a fileserver? Use Samba on Linux. Web server and etc... Pretty much everything aside from the stuff that is really only available for Windows. You could try Wine but I doubt that it would work out as expected. Linux outperforms Windows in almost all tasks in hosting anyway.

    Whenever you are not able to use shell and linux commands.
    This is really important though if you want to get full control over it
