Looking for a secure and modern PHP file manager

Dear all,

I am looking for a secure and modern self-hosted PHP file manager.
It does not have to be free, I am willing to pay for a good script. I also would prefer if the author(s) have been around for some time and will probably go on for some more years.

It should be capable to do:

  • Basic file operations
  • Generate thumbnails/previews of media files
  • Streaming media files instead of downloading
  • Generate links to files for easy sharing with friends
  • Have a responsive GUI.

The following already sparkled my interest:

File-Gator
http://www.file-gator.com/
I like the look and the provided features, but am neither sure of its security, nor is it supported by the author. However, the general look is already what I am looking for.

eXtplorer
http://extplorer.sourceforge.net/
Seems to be a good script, but I do not like the Windows-Explorer-Look to much.

FileRun
http://www.filerun.com/
Looks good, has most of the features that I need, no idea about its security aspects, close to the maximum that I am willing to pay (max. USD 50). My favorite for the moment, even though a bit too feature-rich.

Can anyone of you point me to further alternatives (with personal experience, please!) or tell me something about the ones that I have already mentioned? Thank you very much in advance!

Kind regards
-A

    @Amitz

    Free. https://larsjung.de/h5ai/

This is an indexer only tho. So no move / copy / rename etc.

Yep, thank you. But I would need more than an indexer for my plans...

  • How do you feel about codecanyon? This one looks nice....

I agree - absolutely the right direction, thank you.
There's just one snag: It seems as if it creates links to files that allow guessing of further ones instead of obfuscating path and filename. That is unfortunately a show stopper.

/Scratch that, I think that I am wrong with the link generation. Will look deeper into that!

Very nice feature-wise. No question. But the look is quite ancient and reminds me of my "TotalCommander" times on Windows PCs. Will give it a shot anyway, the features look good. Thank you!

  • will owncloud work for you? https://owncloud.org/

  • @Amitz if you are kind enough after you try them out let us know your opinion.

Atm I am also using h5ai as an indexer but looking to see if there is a better alternative (I can work with just an indexer).

I am in the process of moving away from OwnCloud after using it for a long, long time. It caused too many headaches. Either it works just great and fine or it miserably fails. You never know and that begins to be annoying. Furthermore, we do not use most of its features. Essentially, we just need a good and always working file sync and a simple Web-Frontend. Pydio (https://pyd.io/) was another option, but too blown for our needs.

Every user here in the company will get diskspace on a server and a copy of GoodSync (http://www.goodsync.com) in future. GoodSync is a wet dream compared to the OwnCloud client (at least on OS X) when it comes to accurate and flexible syncing. Really - a wonderful piece of software. Now I am looking for a Web-Frontend so that my users also have access to their files and some sharing possibilities when on the go. Sure, we could use GoodSync for the syncing process and OwnCloud as frontend, but I am deeply fed up with OC.

At the moment, FileRun (http://www.filerun.com) and BeDrive (http://codecanyon.net/item/bedrive-file-sharing-and-cloud-storage/12700384) are the favorites, even though still not ideal. The only thing that I do not like about BeDrive is, that Media cannot be played on iOS devices. The streaming does not work there and the general mobile responsiveness is not the best.

So far, so good. I will let you know the outcome and am still open to your fine suggestions. Thanks!

  • I just wanted to bump this topic again, hoping that some more recommendations may pop up. I have not come to a decision yet and am still open to any suggestion. Thanks, folks!

  • A quick 2016 update:

    • File-Gator is now commercial ($25).

    • eXtplorer hasn't been updates since 2011. Last security update was made almost two years ago.

    • FileRun is now free (up to three users).

  • Filerun looks real nice. I'm a check it out and play around with it. Thanks @neogeo

  • I'm also moving away from owncloud/nextcloud for the same reasons. I'm replacing it for Seafile, which I highly recommend. The pro version is free for up to 3 users (I just need one for myself) and there's a community version as well. All data is kept encrypted in the server and haven't had any issue setting it up or maintaining. Just transferred the all installation to a new server and it took me a few minutes, apart from the time transferring the data folder.
Doesn't have any of the extra features of owncloud but what it does, it does very well.

  • Also a quick update from my side: I am using File-Gator since 1 year in the meantime (this thread is quite old) and it does for me what it should. I might take a look at FileRun again. But File-Gator is okay already.
