HTML For Dummies...
Hi guys,
Looking to get a "jokey" gift for one of my friend who keeps bugging me to teach them some HTML/CSS.
Anybody got any good books that I can pick up for them? When I mean basic, I mean they're only just capable of loading up webpages, doing some troubleshooting with software, and know their way around Office etc.
I was thinking "HTML FOR DUMMIES" But the series is a little bit too sporadic for me.

Microsoft FrontPage 98 Step by Step looks good..
rotfl
Honestly I'd assume that is more complex than pulling NP++ up to be honest... Or I could give her Dreamweaver and let her make everything in tables...
Frontpage FTW! hahaha
For a second there I thought I was on reddit.
instead of book you should give following link;
http://htmldoctor.info/.

I don't think that is a gag gift/funny gift. Although if it was in physical book form that'd be awesome!
give him cheap tablet like Ainol and let that person start learn from this page:

Get them "HTML/XHTML/CSS for dummies"
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0470916591/?tag=hydra0b-21&hvadid=9550952949&ref=asc_df_0470916591
Not a book but it's really good:

^this
The best HTML training - http://www.w3.org/wiki/HTML/Training
Google if your best friend
I've used W3 and CodeCademy, but it was a gag gift, so a physical book, written similar "for dummies" would be interesting....
May just get the "for dummies" series, it's cliche but it would be effective !
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1118008189
pretty informative if you look at the preview
Honestly W3 isn't the best place to learn, just good for reference. I guess it's really just who teaches you best
W3 is a community which sets the relevant standards via board meetings and telephone meetings, etc.
How can it be not the best place to learn?
You're definitely getting correct information if you learn from W3.
RFCs (released for comments) - http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc3986.html are pretty good to read up to as well.
Because their guides and articles are near unreadable for someone that wasn't part of the creation of the spec, for example.
What the hell? How exactly do the RFCs teach beginners HTML?
I learnt programming through RFCs and debugging. Its a lot of time spent but it was quality knowledge.
Its always good to get newbies to know about the correct standards first.
@GIANT_CRAB ..... It's a gag gift, not a "lets be a pro 200$/hr web coder".
@GIANT_CRAB
That's like giving a dictionary or law book lol
This isn't quite right but maybe something similar:

You can buy posters.
This.
"Here, I'll give you a dictionary, now you can learn English."
@Raindog308 although that's hilarious...
Scenario being I was making random bits and bobs site wise, "Wooin'g" this girl through it; (Seriously, I have no idea how HTML can interest the other gender...)
She was all "Damn, wish I knew how to make sites so I could do the same for you" So being it XMAS around the corner, the idea is to either teach her (it's a bit... eurgh) or get her something silly like HTML For dummies, think i'm going to go for the latter, safe with that.
@BronzeByte @Giant_Crab @Joepie91
Sure... Let's go learn HTML through RFCs and Debugging... :S No. Stupid idea.
I've never heard of seducing a woman through markup language.
You are blazing a bold new trail and, if successful, thousands of nerds will hail you as messiah.
I once had a girl text me JavaScript.....
Yes, but in this case you're trying to seduce a girl in a language that is not Turing Complete.
I once was with a girl that knew HTML.. she used tables for creating layout and refused to learn CSS.. needless to say it didn't work out :P
I guess you could play with http://www.gumbyframework.com/ there is loads of documentation about it and how to do cool things.
