Have there been some major increases in backbone downloads speeds or is it just better caching?

In the last few days I have seen some really fast downloads. Gigabytes of files transferred between providers over ssh within minutes, and some very fast http downloads. In the SSH transfer it felt as though they must have been in the same DC.

For instances I downloaded VirtualBox to a server and it complexed in seconds.
If felt as though some kind of system detected the file name, realized that it was available locally and simply added some kind of symlink for it rather than download the whole thing. it didn't feel like it was cached.

In the case of the http there something going involving transparent caching at ISPs I should know about?

  • It's hard to answer without you going into details of location, the ISP, data center etc. Can't really tell what happened or if any changes were made. The world does change all the time though :)

It's the implementation of IPv6 and WEBv2. The internet is being upgraded.

  • Where is your service located, your local provider may have added capacity which you would probably notice if was previously congested.

Please send me the link for Debian .exe installation.

  • @rchurch The reason you are seeing the responses you are here is because it is common for many large companies to use CDN and have local download points in most large data centers. Oracle for sure uses a technology like this to promote faster downloads. So your question/comment seems a bit funny as most realize this is already the case and your acting like their was some super awesome unknown upgrade, lol.

    Cheers!
