Naming scheme for servers

I'm trying to find a proper naming scheme for my servers.
Right now i name them CountryCodeNumber.domain
For example:
us1.domain.asd
us2.domain.asd
de1.domain.asd
However i'm not really happy with this method because:
-It doesn't allow naming the servers by their purpose
-When i cancel one of the servers i have a "gap" in the numbers
-It's not very easy rememberable
Does anyone have a better idea for a naming scheme that also scales well?

It depends on the usage of the machine, sometimes they are woman names, other are river names and the most SciFi have been battlestar galactica names.
If you want to have it easy you can use: providerLocation.domain.
servercity.servercountry.domainname.
I have been using animals for a while, mostly big cats.
I've been naming mine after Star Wars ships.
We name it after Star Wars fans who name their servers after Star Wars ships.
We actually had a lengthy thread on this on the old forums. Maybe someone can find it and provide a link.
We just do one letter - two number codes where the letter is the type of server. be it router, switch, client server or support server.
We use dragon-themed names. Like NEST are our web servers, FIRE is for OpenVZ nodes, SHADOW is for Xen nodes, EYE is our monitoring servers, WING is our internal VPN servers, and we have a 2 page document with other names for other servers we might possibly have (I had a lot of fun with that).
Need to make sure Apple doesn't have a patent on that (i.e. their MacOS X names) otherwise their lawyers would be knocking on your door
For my company I have been naming my boxes using the names of nearby cities/suburbs.
I used to use the us1 and uk1 formats but that wasnt interesting enough for me so I started an alphabetical order one, Alpha (SV1), Bob (SV2), Chromium (SV3) and so on... As a side note, I named my kitten after dmmcintyre3's server/cat's XD
The turtles and the computers get names from Shakespeare plays (mostly).
machine names (both PC and servers listed):
* When turtles are young it's difficult to tell the sex, so the boxy was given the two names. Then it started burying itself in the dirt with just the head sticking out, so we just called it Yorick. Then it got old enough we could tell it was female... figures.
** Farley has been around long enough that it predates this naming convention.

I go off practically anything Star Wars... I tend to stick to a certain first letter as well. Just find something you like and can remember easily; that's what counts.

Greek and Roman gods :P
Greek and Roman gods, stars, planets, nebulas... And sometimes simply the function, e.g. mysql1.domain.tld.
I have this sort of naming scheme:
For Nodes: VM1.USA VM2.USA
Shared: SH1.USA SH1.AUS
Reseller: RH1.USA RH1.AUS
etc etc
Works well.
Places in my past that are meaningful to me - names of hills, streets, towns, mountains, districts, subdivisions.
It's a personal thing I guess.
We name them after animals and colors
Probably switch to Pokemon after we run out of ideas.
I name my servers after units in Starcraft 2
I name mine after the constellations (aquila , eclipse, filips [this is probably not one of them], bootes) etc.
I name the KVM nodes are different cakes

You can name your servers according to your work / convenience because it helps you to remember easily. You can use the names of animals, birds or anything but remember that should be easy to remember and could not cause any difficulty while jobs. Don't use the technical terms that related with the servers as it leads to confusion.
I think that's not recommended simply because you may reassign the server for another purpose, leaving a name not matching a purpose, although if you wipe the server before then it doesn't really make a difference.
I used to name them after pornstars but I have exactly the same way of naming them now, countrycode01,02,03 etc -- Got the same problems as you have.
We use character names from Mass Effect/ Mass Effect 2 (and hopefully 3). ie) Shepard, Liara, Mordin, Sovereign, etc. Actually had one or two emails from clients who noticed and emailed us about it

As I never needed yet more than 1 vps in the same DC, I still keep location.domain.tld. I have then a sanjose (thanks Franscico), phoenix, bangkok... etc. And a special one "home" of course :-)
Well, unless the server has a specific purpose; like solusmaster or "Root" as it hold our main-site, or the suchlike, we actually go with random human names.
Our team tend to use http://www.babynames.co.uk/Baby_name_generator.htm until they find a name that suits :P
