Backup solutions?

Hello,

What do you think guys about my backup solution?

This is a webserver

-Cpanel with suPHP
-Cloudlinux with CageFS technology
-Raid 1 2x2TB
-Hardware Raid card
-DDOS protection (arbor)
-Root login off , user login then > su login.

-APF firewall

Is that enought combo? Or am i missed something? At this time i not make external backups. Is this a big mistake?

Comments

  • In terms of backups yes, backing up to an external, off site location is good practise.

It definitely is! What if your you lose all your data due to hard drive failure, server gets null routed due to heavy DDoS etc? You should always maintain external, offsite backups.

  • Here is my backup solution

    1 x 320GB HDD
    1 x 250GB HDD
    2 x 160GB HDD
    512MB RAM
    800MHz
    10mbit line
    Unlimited BW
    No DDoS protection
    NAT Ports

    Thanks for you answer!

Hard drive failure > RAID1 2 disk solve the problem..and the hardware raid card is a big +1 point.
If i got heavy DDOS then the ddos protection solve it.

Or how do you think , which way :)?

    Yes.
Backups are only good if stored on another server. Then there are different levels of backups.
Server besides the main server, server in another part of the building, server at another location, serverS (as in more then one) in different locations.

  • leased or colocated hardware? what if your provider declares insolvency or got raided by law enforcements or simply reinstall/delete your server by accident etc?

even you by yourself may accidentically delete something essential by yourself, which is nothing your raid protects against. just simple faults that may happen.

just try 'rm -rf /' and lets see how you do a restore from your 'backup' solution than? ;-)

so I'd say: in your solution is nothing worth to be called backup, you've yet not even achieved any kind of duplicity of your precious data.

Well its an online.net classic 8gb with hardware raid.

Yeah if i make rm... there cannot be there any backup solution

You could be in trouble if your raid controller fails. And Online.net's default anti-DDoS does not protect you against bigger attacks.

In my opinion is 2 Live backups and a cold storage (Tape, HDD in a safe place)

  • You can try a safe place for your backup. you can try s3 amazon.

  • maybe it is some kind of language barrier than... the system above maybe some kind of a reliable system with some good approaches to protect against different kind of odds and issues.

but as I would say again, there is nothing in it, which I would consider a real backup, so to simple answer your question from opening post:

At this time i not make external backups. Is this a big mistake?

YES. (as mikho already explained) ;-)

  • Online.net offers FTP backup space
