What sort of DDoS protection are you looking for?
Just so you know, true DDoS protection simply cannot be obtained at the $5-10 range. With that said, I think you're posting on the wrong forum all together.
Define "true" please.
Some hosts define DDoS protection as being that they will simply null route the target IP for x amount of time. Others just put a basic firewall that has basic rules and was never meant to be in a DC setup.
True DDoS protection should be able to take a huge hit on an ongoing basis without any service issues (slowness, downtime) and still being able to keep you as a customer after taking the hit.
You simply cannot do that in the $5-10 range considering bandwidth costs. Math doesn't lie.
