VNC as root

ubuntu 14.04 / 4GB VPS /VestaCP

I have installed VNC - which I've successfully done but I could not access nautilus as ROOT so I may operate on all files whatsoever. Please know that I'm aware of the risks, and I don't care -- I just need to operate fully on my OS, and manage files freely whenever wanted.

any recommendations or pointers please ?? how to enable VNC for root ?

I went this route

  • www.tightvnc.com works fine on root.

  • Yea I guess I was just overlooking a fairly simple thing... since the guides/tuts always use a user to VNC, I just tried the approach with root and adding him as vnuser and I was able to login.

    Thanks anyways.

As you've already pointed out, running VNC as root is a bad idea, if you need to run a GUI application with root privileges use gksudo.

Login to VNC as your regular user, open up a terminal and do gksudo nautilus it will prompt you for your sudo password.

This will lanuch your GUI program with root permissions and saves you from having to launch VNC as root. See the sudo page for more information on gksudo:

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo#Graphical_sudo

If it's something you use on a regular basis you can setup a launcher shortcut or bash alias.
