How do you counter abuse on your servers?

I work for a hosting company as server manager and we're having a lot of issues with phishing and botnets. What measures do you take to keep the badware out? Pretty curious about this one.

  • MaxMind seems to be what alot of people use.

  • yeah but we are having a lot of false positives with MaxMind mostly, so we disabled it

  • There are a few blacklists like FraudRecord, can you also examine the users provided information to confirm its consistent. The other thing is to monitor your server's traffic, make sure the traffic you're receiving is relevant to the customer's requested service.

Assuming you're doing shared hosting, phishing emails generally attract a tonne of traffic, so looking at your webserver's top 10 hit URLs will give you some idea whats going on.
