VPS for Streaming Audio - Unmetered Bandwidth

Hi LowendTalk

I'm looking for a VPS that has unmetered bandwidth, at 100mbps, prefer 1gbps for streaming an internet radio station.

I don't really care on location cause i'm gonna stream it at 128kbps, i heard Germany, and Netherlands has something like that.

I have looked around on lowendbox but to no avail.

  • What's your budget, like 200-400 euro?

You can spam me with any yearly shared hosting deal.

  • no cheap, lowendbox prices

  • 100mbps unmetered for $85/month: http://egihosting.com/bargin_dedicatedservers.aspx

FreeVPS.us - The oldest post to host VPS provider
  • i need cheaper than that i suspect 4TB might be enough

    How cheap? < $7?

    < $7 isn't going to happen.

  • it's hard to judge but most give you 1TB and i think im going to need more

Wow, with those prices, you deserve only the best quality. I recommend IPAP Co's Super VPS.

Now if we're going back to reality, Spacerich might have what you're looking for, and URPad has 5TB Budget VPS for $5, but at 10mbps.

Now, I personally have never used any of them, so I take no responsibility for what happens (ESPECIALLY IF YOU CHOOSE IPAP).

When you find that perfect VPS, KEEP IT.

You may have answered your own question. :)

not bad, but is 10mbps fast enough to stream?

  • Do the maths :P
10Mbit/s will serve about 70 clients at 128 kbps (according to wolfram alpha).

  • thats not too bad at all,

  • Or more if you stream in aac or ogg at a lower bitrate.

  • I really wonder if any of these providers can deliver such speeds and/or usage.

    I think they're overselling.

Given the fact they got their site & billing hacked and deny it actually happened still I'd be seriously iffy about it. They've still not emailed their customer base about it to this day and it happened weeks ago.

A more malicious person would email authorize.net to let them know.

Interesting that Semoweb is speaking up in that thread. Aren't they in the dog house for something as well?

And a side note is that 5 mbps unmetered, is close to 1.5 TB / Month (and which is achieved ONLY if it's left 24/7 downloading at full speed), Virpus used to give that choice with their budget plans (choose between 5mbps unmetered, or 1TB metered on 100mbps). So 10 mbps UNMETERED, is also around 2.9-3 TB/m (again, ONLY, if left 24/7 downloading at full speed, otherwise this BW is unachievable). So, if what seems fine (70 clients at once) is what you expect at least initially, then you are looking for no more than 3TB/month (ie 10mbps unmetered).

But in reality, if your maximum listeners are 70, then they will be only at a peak time which may be just several hours during a whole month! So, you probably not going to make it to even 1TB/m. Also, you might have an average number of listeners in most time, while at some peak hours it jumps to 150 online! From previous calculation it's obvious that 10 of them are not being able to connect if you have an even more costly 20Mbps UNMETERED!

While if you got a regular plan (metered as being called) connected at 1Gbps, you probably not going to worry at all for such peak times, even if it comes with 1TB/month bandwidth, which is very commonly offered. So, what I'd suggest is going with any metered plan with just 1TB/m, and see how things goes. However, it's of benefit to have it with a provider that offers like 2TB for the next plan, 3TB for the next, 4 for the next, etc, and has an affordable price range in between plans, so that you can upgrade once needed. Unlike if you went with a provider that seems to focus on something other than bandwidth, like a provider with 1TB/m for all plans! Or, a provider that has Plan A costs $6/m with 1TB, while plan B costs $20/m with 1.5TB, plan C costs $39/m for 2TB. Since those are common as well and probably won't be suitable. Edit: or instead of available plans, a provider with an easy bandwidth upgrades, e.g. http://buyvm.net

  • Also, you can put several bitrates for your stream I guess.
Let's say, If I want to listen your radio, and you offer 128 MP3, 64 MP3 and 48 AAC, probably I will take the 48 AAC because I am in the streets with my Edge phone xD

  • good to know, i have a windows server vps with TelVPS 1.5TB per month for $7.95USD 1GB ram is that a good deal?

They had some node stability issues but they've at least been replying and informing their clients of what's going on :)

Have you tried calculating how much will you really need? At 128 Kbit, 100 Mbit gets you about 700 parallel streams; 1TB transfer gets you about 25 listeners (24x7x31). There is a plenty of LEB providers offering unmetered 100 Mbit:
    http://www.lowendbox.com/?s=unmetered+bandwidth&searchsubmit=Find
And since no one will listen radio 24x7, the second option might be good for 300-500 casual listeners. But to stay on the safe side, let's make that 2TB: http://www.lowendbox.com/?s=2TB&searchsubmit=Find Also, a lot of offers to check out.

  • Oh, last time I heard, they hadn't been. My bad.

Wow, a host that actually communicates with their clients. That's a rarity around here...

    Thanked by 1davidnz
  • just saw this on wht. they give really a lot of bw but I never had a vps with them.

  • www.vmlit.com give an amazing deal! they host in SmartDC data centre in Rotterdam, any experience with this data centre ?

  • actually just found out they do not allow commercial streaming

That seems good enough, for Windows VPS & 1 GB of RAM & 1.5 TB, that is really good deal! Are you looking for Windows vps? And what does their next plan / available bandwidth upgrade (if they offer so) costs?

But not all of their providers are in deadpool :D

It's good to have offers suitable for offering in LEB, since not that many providers offers even less than $10 for windows VPS, for few reasons it costs more than Linux. And offers being considered as LEB and listed are usually less than $7/m. However, also, try checking here at LET for windows VPS: http://www.lowendtalk.com/discussions/tagged/windows
