Android Malware Steals Information and Coerces People to Pay a Hefty Fee

Six men, three of which held executive positions at IT firms, have been arrested in Tokyo for stealing more than $250,000 from smartphone owners who have unsuspectingly installed Android malware on their devices. The program served as a video player on adult websites and was downloaded by 9,252 individuals, 211 of which paid $1,200 for the service. A pop up ad would appear every 5 minutes urging the user to pay the fee. The app was designed to steal phone numbers, email addresses and other information found on the device, storing it on a server located overseas.

I wish we could see screenshots of the app somewhere? >.> How would someone be stupid enough to pay every 5 minutes?

  • How many people would be dumb enough to give a video app the ability to see there contacts.

Not every windows user is a geek. A friend of mine was once telling me about the lawyer at her company that was consistently watching porn at work as such getting various "players" and "codexes" to play it, so was blackmailed to pay various amounts of money for the pop-ups and links to porntube or whatnot to disappear from his desktop as well as the compromising wallpapers...
Ransomware is not new in the business.

Apparently there are 9,252 individuals who would rather fulfill their needs via a 4" screen rather than a 17"+ monitor...

Tokyo is the most expensive town in the world, ppl cant afford the place a 17 " would take. This is why japanese make things small.
