Digital Ocean launches in London!

edited July 2014 in Providers

Today we are thrilled to announce that developers can now launch Droplets in our newest region, London, United Kingdom.

Our community has been requesting a UK region for a while now, and we’re excited to announce that it is now available. It is through our users’ support that we have now been able to expand to five regions globally.

London is experiencing a boom in tech and entrepreneurship that looks very similar to NYC’s own tech expansion a few years ago, and we want to provide innovative companies in the United Kingdom with the infrastructure they need to grow and succeed. Additionally, we want to ensure that UK developers can comply with data privacy regulations by having a native facility.

IPv6 and private networking are available for Droplets deployed in the new London region. We are excited to see what is developed in the London datacenter and look forward to offering more DigitalOcean regions around the world as we continue to grow.

Mmm, most of the routes go over NTT which is quite crap imo, not getting the best latency ever.

They clearly get wholesale deals from these carriers, due to using them in many of their other locations too.

All in all, pretty underwhelming, do not see the need for London when they already have not just one, but two DCs in Amsterdam, which is pretty close. Would've been much more awesome to see JP/HK or even South America added. And if they want to expand in Europe, Stockholm would've made more sense from the diversity/coverage standpoint.

It may appear underwhelming but I suspect the market within the UK itself for those who want a UK location is big enough to justify the move. As I have said before, the market DO and others are chasing is far bigger than the free credit chasers and lowend markets.

  • Great news from DO, defiantly will try out new DS

Will they get DDoS too there? It will be interesting

Agreed, Slough is crap and it's noticable with the crappy transit they have. Although location even if it's slap in the middle of London isn't really any good if you have crappy transit.

Anyone able to pinpoint the exact datacenter yet?
