can you have a vps at Dallas and its ip at LA -- GVH has this

agentmishraagentmishra Member, Host Rep

i purchased a vps with GVH sometime back location Dallas

with all the nuts in their service sudden service outages and many more, i just did i ip2location check at the ip2location.com

to my astonishment it showed that the ip is at LA.

when i raised a support ticket, after a few replies from both the sides (GVH and myself), Jon from GVH replied, "i was promised a server at Dallas and its there, no where it was written that i would be satisfied with ip2location pointing to Dallas"

this i rate as better service or better arrogance or what?

    I saw an IP in Australia geo-located to Kansas, USA yesterday. You can't trust it.

    i had felt these people would give me a dallas ip...

    is it not grey marketing or cheating

  • If the box is in Dallas and they've updated their records it may not have propagated yet... that's why people are saying post the trace.

    ok the traceroute is as follows

    =================

    TraceRoute from Network-Tools.com to 123.123.123.123 [123.123.123.123.static.quadranet.com]
    Hop (ms) (ms) (ms) IP Address Host name
    1 0 0 0 206.123.64.46 -
    2 0 0 0 64.124.196.225 xe-4-2-0.er2.dfw2.us.above.net
    3 0 0 0 206.223.118.120 eqx.10ge.dal.bboi.net
    4 141 4 7 64.127.129.118 8011-on-net-cust.bboi.net
    5 0 0 0 173.254.255.66 -
    6 1 0 1 123.123.123.123 123.123.123.123.static.quadranet.com

    ==================

    have changed the main ip to 123.123.123.123

  • So maybe they never updated the records...

    If you don't wanna post it that's cool but the only other thing we can do is tell you to ticket into your provider and ask.

    That is a very unheathy ping...

    Looks like they didn't update the records to reflect the location or they're handling traffic from a transit server in LA.

    Odd, that ping though... @GreenValueHost.

  • Delimiter's servers in Atlanta used to show up in Jamaica haha, they are fixed now though.

    Dallas. IPs haven't been updated. My guess is that if it's been 3 months someone just forgot... ticket in.

    Are there any rules/regulations for keeping GEO IP data up to date?

    GeoIP is a third party service. The only real distinction is EU, US etc. Reg records must be accurate though.

    Hm, a provider I used to use had servers in Manchester but IPs recorded as being in Glasgow. I'm anal retentive so things like that bug the fuck out of me.

    I can take a look at the ping issue but I cannot guarantee resolution to the GeoIP issue.

    As your traceroute shows, your VPS is in Dallas and nowhere in our ads or website does it advertise that your IP address would be located in the city that the server is purchased with. Everything we have in Dallas and Los Angeles right now with QuadraNet is subject to change later on when we move everything back to ColoCrossing in which the GeoIP would be Buffalo.

    I also told you that we're (as in GVH staff) are not really here to educate you if you purchased an unmanaged VPS. You shouldn't have to ask US this question and I've told you the same thing everyone is telling you here repeatedly. I would recommend purchasing an upgrade to managed service.
