Subdomains on VPS (using 1&1 registrar)

compilecompile Member

I signed up with vpsdime about a week ago.
Set up Phabricator (on mysite.com) and it works beautifully.

I'd like to move the set up to repo.mysite.com and access it from there. Everything I've tried seems to not work.

Subdomain settings :http://imgur.com/7QXhrhL
phabricator.mysite.com (under /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/): http://imgur.com/UmAbxVs

There is also another file located in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/ named 000-default which looks like: http://i.imgur.com/ErrSm5a.png

I don't understand why, when browsing to repo.mysite.com I get http://imgur.com/dFX14n6

Please any help would be appreciated :(.

  • Everything seems to be in order in the configs, looks like it's most likely a DNS issue.

To rule out that it's your own computer's DNS cache causing shit to go down, try entering repo.mysite.com into the Pingdom Speedtest. Whilst it's primary purpose is indeed to test how fast it loads, it also generates a screenshot, so you'll be able to tell whether the rest of the world is able to access your site.

Also, make sure Apache is running. :)

  • Nope. Maybe it hasn't propagated yet?
    I'm getting frustrated beyond belief.

It's (most likely) a DNS issue. Defining document root in that 1and1 DNS thingy doesn't seem right. That sounds like a shared hosting feature. A subdomain should be a simple A or a CNAME.

  • What do I put for cname?

It should point to your VPS.

  • CNAME as the IP?

  • Does dig command on your sub domain point at the right ip ?

  • CNAME is a basically an alias.

If you've an A record named "myserver.example.com" pointing to 12.34.56.78, you can set up a subdomain with a CNAME "mysubdomain.example.com" that points to "myserver.example.com".

  • I have the A record for my domain set to the VPS IP.

I set the sub domain CNAME to mysite.com

So you removed that document root thing from 1and1 and set up a CNAME instead? Should be correct then. You probably have to wait up to 24 hours for your records to propagate.

  • Just removed it.
Still no luck. I'll wait a bit.

  • 1and1 sometimes takes hours to update their DNS servers. Did you try to ping repo.mysite.com from your local computer to see whether the IP address is correct?

  • I don't get this. On my phone I get the php file, but on my PC chrome can't find the page nor can i ping it (ping works on my phone)

  • Phone does DNS lookup from different cached server (Wireless company) than your PC which does the lookup from your ISP's DNS cache. If you're running Windows, try "ipconfig /flushdns" from the command line. This will clear the DNS cache on your PC.

  • Did that still the same.

  • You'll just have to wait it out.

One more cache you can control... your router. Power cycle it and your cable modem/dsl modem/Fios router/whatever. That'll flush its DNS cache.

Otherwise, it's just your ISP being slow to update.

  • 1&1 propagation time are quite long. you have to be patient. i have 1 domain with them, using their $1 promo.

  • ok its working but now all i see is the php file...:|

  • Be careful with 1&1. They sent me to collections once because I signed up and never paid the 1st invoice..
