Google analytics

I just got a $3.95 VPS from MiniVPS.US and it works. I'm not expecting much for four bucks so not really complaining. However, I was experiencing long delays in displaying a simple web page. Finally I figured out that it was from them injecting a Google analytics script. This is a nuisance as most people would block GA and not be willing to wait a long time and reload the page. Unblock GA and it works.

So, where is this injection done? Can I edit that myself?

  • You have any proxy settings turned on for CURL or whatever you are using to fetch the page?

    Lots of companies use Google Analytics so it's not uncommon. Just use noscript or something, it should block it.

  • Are you saying they're injecting GA into your webpage hosted on your VPS?

  • Yes, they're injecting it into my page. See http://hijk.ml It's just a test and not important. But if people like me who turn off Google Analytics can't view the page, then the server is not really suitable for web pages. I could use it for something else I guess.

  • Just use ssl.

    I don't see it:

    @Ole_Juul

    I don't see any Google analytics code or requests when I visit the site.
    Did you fix it?

    If you are still seeing analytics code injected; maybe it is caused by a browser plugin?

    P.S. In the pic on the site, I really want to play that sweet looking bass on the wall.

    Man if i had a dime for every time someone told me "this happened and I didn't do it so that's proof that you did"...I would be a wealthy man.

    I cannot find any Google references. I seriously doubt the provider has anything to do with it.

    You probably have a virus or malware on your computer.

    Someone beat me to it.

  • First, thanks for renaming the thread. :)

    I'm running FreeBSD on my browsing computer. The way the problem is visible is to block Google Analytics (I use Ghostery in Firefox), then remove cookies. Then reload the page. It will be blank. Checking the page code I get this:

    How can my own browser be doing this? It doesn't happen with the page that I just put on my RIJX VPS test site. I've never seen it on any of my other web sites either.

  • Ghostery clearly shows GA on the page. Also, those people who went to the page did not clarify that they blocked Google Analytics. Perhaps they didn't, and also didn't check what scripts were running. The problem shows up when GA is blocked.

  • I installed Ghostery plugin for Firefox, set it to block GA, visited your page... and it displays as before (with the new screenshot image). No problem, no trace of GA. The Ghostery block log is empty.

  • sleddog and namhuy, thank you very much for taking the time to do that. I really appreciate it. As you see from the screen shot that I posted, the effect is real. It was taken 40 minutes ago.

    Something is funny here. Perhaps me, but I'm not exactly new to troubleshooting. :) Since I took that screenshot, it is not happening any more. To help my sanity, I just went and checked on a Linux box with a fresh install. That box had this effect last night. It does not do so now. How can this be?

  • namhuynamhuy Member

    I don't use Ghostery so I can't say anything about it, its properly Firefox or one of your plugins caching problem

    I've no conclusions, only data.

  • Well whatever it is, it's embarrassing. Yes, Firefox is suspect, but there are still some other possibilities. I'm not into JS so can't parse the screenshot. In any case, it's still moot and impossible to troubleshoot any more. Thanks for looking at it. :)

    This is done by your domain registrar. It looks like freenom.com is run by the same people from dot.tk who has been known to do this. Check this thread:

    (PS. To certain people, don't involve me in pissing matches, that was the first helpful Google result)

    @jarland

    That makes a lot of sense.. dot.tk was a real shady co.

  • Thanks for the link jarland. It was after I deleted the Freenom cookies that the page worked properly. I had a suspicion. That thread talks about it too.

    I had thought it was MiniVPS.US that was doing it to try to monetize what is obviously not a big money maker. I wouldn't blame them if that was the case, but it's looking like I'm getting my four dollars worth!

    I just looked at that and wonder what you were talking about. I don't know any other way than ssl for connecting to the server, so excuse my ignorance on that subject. In any case, this is about people viewing a web page and my query was about my access to editing the source of the problem. Since it is likely that Freenom is the culprit, I guess the answer would be that I can't - except by editing out my use of Freenom. :)

    No need to apologize.. just trying to point it out to you, can't say I know if it would make a difference or not..
