Windows Server Memory Limits

CltcamCltcam Member

Just purchased a 128GB of ram server with a windows 2008 standard license only to realize that the standard windows 2008 license limits to 32GB of ram, but I want to utilize all 128GBs. The windows 2008 enterprise license allows up to 2tb of ram to be used, but I can't afford to purchase such an expensive license at the moment. Are there any ways to get the license for cheap or companies to rent the enterprise license for an affordable price?

  • If you an upgrade to a Server 2012 Standard license, 2012 Standard is limited to 4TB RAM (though the real limit would be a memory controller supporting 4TB RAM).

Cheapest would be if the provider can provide SPLA licenses. Monthly cost for you, same price for 2012 as for 2008 using same edition.

Enterprise edition will ofcourse be more expensive but you will not need to fork up all the money at once for your own license.

Another suggestion would be to split up the server into smaller parts by using a virtualisation system like esx, proxmox or something.
