Shared hosting is based upon the presumption that the customer will never, ever use anywhere near their allocated diskspace or bandwidth, and they generally don't require IPs.
VPS hosting.. well.. generally needs a bit more wack. Which comes at a premium, sadly.
Please note that i'm really really noob in hosting (provider) world.
But, webfaction is IMHO special shared hosting. If you just develop ordinary web with php, django, ruby on rail, webfaction can do that for you. You can even install your own nginx . And maybe your own memcache. They also has memory limit , 256MB. Data transfer limit, 600GB
But, once again, i'm only noob in this hosting world.

The test file maxed my connection speed on single-threaded download, pretty nice result. Have you worked out the final price and ETA for this?
I get unimpressive speeds (~50-100 KB/s), both to my home connection in Sydney, Australia (with an ISP peered at HKIX) and to a VPS in California. That's pretty much what I expected; you don't buy a HK VPS for connectivity to Australia or the US, you buy it for connectivity to HK and China.
For future reference, there's no need to compile nginx from source to get a reasonable version: Dotdeb has 1.2.0 and Debian's own squeeze-backports has 1.19.0, either of which just requires a line added to /etc/apt/sources.list; if you don't mind a different default config, nginx themselves make Debian packages.
