Online Project Management - looking for open source alternatives to Basecamp

just been suggested that I look at seafile. looks nice, and I will investigate. it reminds me that I'm also looking for an alternative to basecamp. no necessarily open source, but that would be preferable, as I'd like to self host it.

as a general question, what does everyone use for project management? basecamp is good but not cheap. github and sourceforge are great for code monkeys, but not for others.

  • Depends on your definition of project management. Basecamp is good for todo lists but for project management forget it. Plan.io and wrike.com are more suitable

none of them open source; looking good, tho

not tried redmine. I will spin up a copy and see what it looks like.

  • Here's your ultimate matrix: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_project_management_software

Trac is pretty good, but you may be missing some features. I've used phpGroupware and PHProject once, but it was a long time ago.

    No http://podio.com/ fan here?

Redmine, Trac, etc. are one kind of project management. Basecamp is quite another. You really need to say what PM means to you.

Trello and Asana is very nice for PM but they're hosted.

I've not yet found a good self-hosted project management app that isn't commercial, at least not in the sense of gantt charts, dependencies, group calendar, etc.

what about JIRA, Host version, almost free for 10 less user.

  • BruceBruce Member

    @raindog308 thanks for the link.

I'm looking for collaboration, sharing docs, tasks. self-hosted basecamp is about as close as I can describe it. basecamp is good, but not cheap, as you know. I don't need full-on gant charts or code/bug stuff.

new version of openatrium seems interesting

Another vote for Bitrix24 - not just because it's free and goes beyond Basecamp, but because you can move it from cloud to your server any time you want.

  • BruceBruce Member

bitrix looks nice but isn't free for self hosting.

Freedcamp positions itself as free Basecamp alternative. Never used it though, so I can't comment about features or licensing policies.

  • https://redbooth.com (formerly Teambox) is a pretty good Basecamp alternative, and free for up to 5 users.

    +1

Podio is enterprise grade. free for 5 users.
Very flexible and customizable with the apps:

There is no self-hosted version of Podio, is there? I think Bruce wants the self-hosted version (plus Podio PM itself without apps sucks, much worse than even free alternatives like Bitrix24, Trello or Asana - but that's a personal opinion).

  • Atlassian Jira + Confluence = Cheap and affordable for small teams imo.

I like Atlassian products, but I've never seen regular business use either Jira or Confluence. It's either web studios or software devs or IT related business.

Yeah, it is for those type of businesses. He didn't mentioned what field was it for and I didn't had much of thought for it(since this is a vps forum so I think that quite a few are in IT related fields) so I suggested that

  • BruceBruce Member

my interest is for a bunch of code monkeys. we have version control and bug tracking already. so the PM system is more for document and discussion management

  • if small team, jira is very cheap

  • BruceBruce Member

we currently use basecamp and can't do enough with the money we spend. hence looking for a better solution.

Did you try Wrike? It's not as good as Bitrix24 overall, but their project management is probably among the top three overall - a lot better than Basecamp (though beating Basecamp is not really that much of an accomplishment). It can be pricey though.

Bitrix24 has zero entry, if you do a blog review, they will add another 25G extra. Good enough for a small company.

I am testing their professional now. So far so good. May adopt it if it is reliable and employees love it.

Free IOS and Android is ++ for us to get connected while on remote.

  • Thank you for the info and reminder on security i am using webuzo with 3 vps servers i have they have some good security options on there, after reading this i will beef up my security for my personal servers.
